I have a PPP connection between two SCO machines up and running. The problem is that when I ping from one to the other, it is taking 550 - 600ms. I'm using two Hayes Optima 14.4 v.32bis modems, and i'd assume that I could get at least 250 - 300ms. I have the rate in /usr/lib/uucp/Devices (and Systems) set to 19200. In /etc/ppphosts I have VJ, accomp, and protocomp all set. Anyone have any ideas? -me

I'm using a MultiTech 1432 for my PPP connection and I've got the serial port baud rate set at 38400 and with this, "ping" turns around in 250ms on average. I fixed the serial baud rate at 38.4 in "/etc/default/atdialMT" (you will need to identify the equivalent file for your modem) in addition to setting Devices and Systems. If the modems are attached to standard serial ports, make sure that 16550 UARTs are installed. The 16450's limit is 19.2 with occasional packet loss, according to my observations, which results in non-fatal tcp errors. I hope this helped. Edwin Babadaglian edwinb@panix.com

I have 250-300ms on my PPP connection with V.32bis modem. My /etc/ppphosts is: 1.2.3.4 - host-ppp idle=15 rtscts ipaddr protcomp mru=1500 accomp VJ --- I have an NS16550AFN UART on my modem. That's all that's needed. Make sure that your modem has commpression/reliable link settings on. 1. In addition to all the other stuff already posted, look at the
V.42bis parameters. There may be a block size which can be set smaller
for better turnaround and larger for better max compression.
2. Repeat your question in comp.dcom.modems, we have some sharp modem
guys there who may know additional Hayes tricks.
