Hi there...sorry to bring this up again if someone has already asked this, but I've got a few queries about getting a new motherboard: I'm thinking of getting a 486DX-33 VLB motherboard, and could do with some advice as regards versions of VESA, ZIF, BIOS, etc.. I would ideally like to get hold of a motherboard that will take the new DX4 chip, and I've been told this requires the 3.3V ZIF socket..? Trouble is, the dealers that I've asked haven't got a clue what version ZIF their boards have!!..Could someone explain to me the different version ZIF sockets there are? I believe that the different versions have different colours? My previous motherboard used AMI BIOS, which I thought was good, but does anyone have a recommendation as to which BIOS is better than another??! When buying a motherboard through a magazine, there doesn't seem to be much to go on...they mearly point out that it's a 486DX-33 VLB, and that's normally it!! What else should I be looking for? Can anyone in the UK recommend a place to get a good motherboard as specified above? Sorry about all the questions, but if you don't ask you'll never know! Paul.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think in the "3.3V ZIF socket",
the V stands for volts, not version. The version of a ZIF socket
shouldn't matter as long as it has the correct number of pins.

3.3V is the voltage, but apparantly there are different versions of the ZIF
socket which have different voltages, and version 3? has 3.3V which is the
voltage required for the DX4..

I am going to buy a Soyo motherboard this week with a "ZIF socket 3", with a 486DX2-66MHz which uses 5 Volts. The color of the socket is white. The motherboard I want to buy has a Green PC function and a LOT of jumpers. Perhaps also a jumper to set the processor voltage to 3.3V, I don't know. Furthermore, I've heard the first version of the ZIF socket is blue, and I don't know about the ZIF socket version 2. Some people say the blue ZIF socket will NOT be compatible with the P24T (Pentium Overdrive), because of heat problems, and in one store somebody told me the ZIF socket 2 can blow up the processor in rare cases... (I don't know if that is true). Jesper de Jong jdejong@et.tudelft.nl

Well it should have seeing as socket 3 has been declared as the only socket to
be able to take the DX4 chip which needs 3.3V!

The issue of ZIF socket 'colors' was mentioned in this months edition of 'PC Player' a UK magazine. E. Lock from Huntingdon writes: "..just to clarify a point made in PC Player - there is a 32 bit Pentium called the P24T. In fact, all P24T chips are 32 bit. Many newer boards have a BLUE ziff socket that will take any 486DX or SX chip as well as a P24T Pentium chip as an upgrade. The older DARK BROWN P24T upgrade socketed boards should be avoided as these sockets can melt and be a fire hazard." This may be true, but what about the white sockets...... ;-) /------------------------------------\ | John Allsopp | | | | Peterborough / UK | | | | Internet : John@Sound.Demon.Co.UK | \------------------------------------/
