Hello. I have a grave situation. I took my computer in to a Mac authorized service store in Pasadena to have what was supposed to be a simple procedure performed. I just purchased a new 4G drive and an external case. In my 7600 I had a 1G and 2G drive. Well, I wanted to 1G to be placed in the external case, and the 4G to be placed in the 7600. So, I thought, they don't even need to touch the 2G, so it should be quite safe. Well, the kid who performed the service didn't listen, and placed the 2G in the external case instead! Well, I waited and they switched it back. Then suddenly the 2G wasn't showing up, anymore. They went back and fiddled some more, then suddenly, the 2G was an EMPTY disk named UNTITLED!!!!!!!!! The explanation: "It's a mystery." "Mysterious things happen." "I have no idea how that could have happened." Of course, later, it was explained that there's no way for a drive to become formatted unless someone chooses to have it happen!! So, it's either "mysterious forces" or they formatted it accidentally and wouldn't admit it. Then, they said it was dead because it wasn't spinning. THEN, then it was "oops, we forgot to put the drive spin jumper back on." They offered to have their "data recovery technician" look at it at his convenience. But, all they mentioned was Norton, not what I would expect a data recovery expert to use (hell, anyone can use that!). He said, "HFS+! No way... I can't do that until Norton can do that." Their incompetence leaves me planning for their failure: I need to know where I can go to have that data recovered!!!! I'm in the LA area. The challenge is that the disk was in 2 partions, and one was HFS+ (I was desperate for space!). But, the positive is that it was only formatted and it hasn't had anything written to it since. ANY suggestions! It will set me back 2-4 MONTHS if I can't get those files back. It is all creative work (graphic design, 3d modeling and animation, after effects work, director work). PLEASE HELP! Also, if I do have to go to a 3rd party expert to recovery the data, is it fair to ask for them to cover those costs, or part of those costs? Is there any legal recourse? Many sleepless nights until my data comes home! Help! THANK YOU!

If they simply initialized, or erased it, it *might* be recoverable from a group like DriveSavers, but I wouldn't bet heavy on it. Just goes to show the best recovery software is a good backup strategy. -TMP-

It is supposed to work with HFS+ -- Tim Scoff casper@nb.net http://www.nb.net/~casper/ Imagine that CRAY decides to make a personal computer. It contains 16 Alpha based processors executing in parallel, has 800 megabytes of RAM, 100 Gigabytes of disk storage, a resolution of 4096 x 4096 pixels, does 24bit 3D graphics in realtime, relies entirely on voice recognition for input, fits in your shirt pocket and costs $300. What is the first question the computer community asks? "Is it DOS compatible?"

Don't bother. Just restore from the backup you did just prior to taking
it in for service.

If something needs doing, I'll do it myself.

Many sleepless nights until my data comes home! :Help! THANK YOU! Of course it is reasonable to ask them to pay some reasonable costs for recovering your data. There is no reason that the drive should have been affected by moving it to an external case. My guess is that they accidently set them up with conflicting SCSI IDs. You should probably check to make sure they are not still conflicting. Unfortunately if the basic stuff does not fix it, you will probably not be able to get them to pay the hundreds of dollars for professional recovery. You knew that you were taking a risk when you did not back up the data and it looks like this time it did not pay off. -- Geordie Korper geordie@chapman.com ********************************************************************* * The text above should in no way be construed to represent the * * opinions of my employer, even if specifically stated to do so. * *********************************************************************
