Ralphie is up to his old tricks...rambling on about how superior Alberta is. Gee, I wonder where we might be if we had exlcusive access to all the oil and gas Alberta has. Klein is almost as much of an idiot as dubya....not hard to wipe out a debt when your money comes spewing from the ground...

You are wrong sir! My wife and I moved to Halifax from Vancouver 1 1/2 years ago. We came for a visit for a few weeks, and thought it was so nice we decided to live here. Well, now after living here, we have decided to move back to Vancouver. My job is good here, so it's not a money thing. We DO find the people very small minded/small town. Politics are pathetic, It's very hard to do business here, where "profit" is a dirty word! People here want to be thought of as a real city, but that's a joke! It's very rare you meet someone who DOESN'T drink, or gamble, or who doesn't think playing the 6/49 is a part time job. Trying to find a solid hard worker, who want's to work for the company instead of just their paycheck is a nightmare as well. So, I say if you want to be treated like a real city, act like a real city. gman99@canada.com (gman) wrote in news:a82f1ece.0311210349.3da8ffe@posting.google.com: > Ralphie is up to his old tricks...rambling on about how superior > Alberta is. If I were Alberta, I wouldn't want to be NS - as far as economics goes that is, which is what he was commenting on. Our economy sucks compared to theirs. Also, the best approach here is "Who cares what Ralph Klein says". Cheers! John

Perhaps you should rethink your point of view... http://vancouver.cbc.ca/regional/servlet/View?filename=bc_work20031119 A new study examining the quality of life across Canada has put B.C. near the bottom of the list, saying there is a culture in the province that forces a choice between work and family. It found that employees in B.C. are more likely to be single, or blame work demands for not having children. Linda Duxbury of Ottawa's Carleton University who co-authored the report, says all of the downsizing and restructuring in B.C. has created a lot of mistrust. "The data would suggest that many B.C. workers are cynical," she says."They don't trust their employer. They don't believe their employer is serious about anything they talk about in terms of balance." Duxbury also says companies seem reluctant to adapt to one of the biggest changes affecting our lifestyles - the aging population. She says companies need to recognize that more workers than ever are caring for elderly parents. Along with B.C., Ontario fared the worst in the lifestyle survey. Duxbury says she was surprised to find those who lead the most balanced lifestyles live in Quebec and in Atlantic Canada. The survey was carried out in 2001, and was sponsored by several B.C. family groups, the United Way, UBC and VanCity Savings Credit Union. It's funny. What you say is a direct contradiction to that report which was released this week from Carleton University, saying that Atlantic Canadians are the hardest working, most satisfied, yet lowest paid employees in the country. http://www.herald.ns.ca/stories/2003/11/20/f107.raw.html It is unfortunate that you didn't experience this aspect of the east coast. We certainly are not big city minded, nor do many of us want to be. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing all depends on your perspective, I guess. As for Ralph Klein, I didn't take offense to what he said. I think any "have" province should be very thankful, and it isn't a bad thing to want to maintain a good economy and balanced books. I took his comments not as a slight to NS in particular, but rather expressing relief that Alberta wasn't in the same economic boat as NS. wmd buddy wrote: > You are wrong sir! > My wife and I moved to Halifax from Vancouver 1 1/2 years ago. That's for sure...I'm of the opinion that Halifax is growing too fast too quickly and we are in danger of being overwhelmed by 'progress'. I'm not real fond of the crowds...never used to be that way...housing prices through the roof, high rents....not good IMO.

In fact, I'd say the article talks about Maritimers' commitment to family and community, and our slower way of life, that helps us balance work with other things in our lives. wmd

Ontario huh? Could it be because the salaries in Ontario are so good that no one wants to stay home or have children...doubt me, have a look....even in oil rich alberta NO government employees can even touch this kind of salary (except for the Mayors and Councils in the Cities of Edmonton and Calgary after using the excuse that they did not make as much money as the Mayor of Toronto and they should). Maybe it is time for all the government employees in the province of Alberta to demand that they make as much as those employed in Ontario. http://www.gov.on.ca/FIN/english/salarydisclosure/2003/ontpub03.htm

Actually it is worse for the people who actually live here because we don't even get to share in the wealth. Alberta may be an oil rich, money rich province but believe me when I say that the money does not seem to make it past Ralph Klien. I recently had a fellow who is originally from Ontario tell me that it was time for him to go home. He said that when he came out here 13 years ago things were cheaper but now when he goes home to visit his mother in Ontario even Alberta beef is cheaper to buy there than in the province it is grown, Alberta. Even our salaries don't come anywhere near what public employees in Ontario are making. Not sure, then go to the Alberta web site and have a look for yourself. Ninety nine percent of the jobs pay well under 100,000 dollars, even the managers. House taxes have gone through the roof since Bill Smith became Mayor and services that we should be getting for this money have been cut back so often that in actual fact we don't even get any services. On top of that we have huge user fees and now even have to pay for storm run off...imagine, we have to pay for run off when it rains or snows. There is more but I think you get the picture. It is called GREED. > >wmd > > > > >buddy wrote: >> You are wrong sir! >> My wife and I moved to Halifax from Vancouver 1 1/2 years ago. If life is so good here in Alberta then why are the people who live here so fed up with high taxes and user fees. You should read some of the articles that the papers have written about people being fed up. So, where is all this money Ralph Klien keeps talking about? Must be in all those slush funds that this government likes to create. Sure as heck the people who live and work so hard in this province have not seen it. It is the people that live in this province and continue to pay higher house taxes and user fees that make the province work, certainly not the money the government is making off of oil revenue and gambling. > >Cheers! >John >

Well, for myself the heart lies in Manitoba and Alberta. Given the chance, I would go back, if I could. I'm from the prairies. But I have read something on the Calgary Herald that really pissed me off: SAIT (Southern Alberta Instittue of Technology) was going to roll back wages for all non-unionized cafeteria emlployees back by 3.50 per hour! You read right! So instead of making 9.75, they'd be making ONE CENT more than minimum wage. Makes me sick reading that. I hope the director of S.A.I.T. has a career-wakeup, and discovers what plight these poor workers are in. ][sildur's Bane "Adventure makes the soul grow bold at the thought of danger" On Sun, 23 Nov 2003 07:49:41 GMT, Duh <duh!@home.com> wrote: >On Fri, 21 Nov 2003 10:03:18 -0400, "Chris" <iwchris@hfx.eastlink.ca> >wrote: > >>Perhaps you should rethink your point of view... >> >>http://vancouver.cbc.ca/regional/servlet/View?filename=bc_work20031119 >> >>A new study examining the quality of life across Canada has put B.C. near >>the bottom of the list, saying there is a culture in the province that >>forces a choice between work and family. >> >>It found that employees in B.C. are more likely to be single, or blame work >>demands for not having children. >> [SNIP]

Bigness does not equate with progress. There is little real progress in the city, or the region. It's same ole, same ole. And in Halifax, even the bigness is suspect. Oner wonders just how many ugly three story walkups can exist on one planet.
