HP ScanJet 4200C problems under Win2K

I have asked this on alt.comp.periphs.scanners and
comp.periphs.scanners, with no joy. A Google search on the error message
fins a couple of other sufferers, but no solution :-(

I have just upgraded from WN 98SE to Win2K Pro.
I have an HP ScanJet 4200C scanner.
I have visited the HP website, and downloaded the Win2K drivers for the
scanner <sj655en.exe>
I have installed the software and my machine recognises the scanner
under device manager".
When I boot my machine, the scanner heads move. The power light is on.
When I try to run the software, I get the error "No scanning sources
were found. Reinstall the scanning software. [2138]", and the software
aborts. Needless to say, reinstalling the software, and the device, make
no difference.
What can I do to fix this?
The downloaded software has unzipped to C:\sj655. That contains
hpupdate.exe
hplampc.exe
checkhw.exe
what are these for? Why aren't they run by setup.exe - or are they? They
don't seem to be referred to in the included documentation.
C:\sj655 includes a sub-directory, "English", which also includes a
setup.exe - what's that about?
Why is this so bloody difficult?? :-(

In part, I think, by downloading the (in my case) parallel port drivers from the original, non-HP, manufacturers' site! Is yours a clean install or an "overwrite and upgrade"? And as far as the scanner is concerned, what connection - parallel? HP seem to prefer upgrades - their guidance didn't even cater for a fresh install in my case. But mine involved a lot of "go into device manager and manually delete all the different drivers and bits that might be relevant - then try (again) installing the drivers" type of exercise ... It would be hard for me to remember quite what I did (and I think the notes are at work) but I did finally get there in the end. I have colleagues who are still struggling to get older HP scanners various, working with W2k. Frankly, I personally think the driver software for the (older) HP scanners I've used is just pants - it's nasty to use (bit like Micro$oft, if you want to do what they want you to do it works, if you want to do something else it's either difficult, long-winded, laborious or just plain impossible) and horrible to install! Let us have some more details - but I suspect you're on your own in large part. [I have to say when I did this, I had the luxury of a test PC I could rebuild from a Ghost image every time one installation routine did something nasty ...] -- David Pearson

I've been reaching that conclusion :-(

Clean.

Yup :-(

I have some advice from HP, which has resulted in a further problem; I
won't know if the former works until I've resolved the latter.
I've started another thread about that...

Which bit of "I have installed the software and my machine recognises
the scanner under device manager" or "Needless to say, reinstalling the
software, and the device, make no difference" are you having trouble
understanding?

Here is HP's advice (edited to remove the very basic explanations):
The issue you are facing can be caused due some files not
installed while the installation process. To resolve this issue
please uninstall and reinstall the HP scanning software in the
safe mode.
Please follow the steps listed below to uninstall and reinstall
the scanning software in Safe Mode, avoiding any software or
driver conflicts..
Step 1: Disconnect the scanner from the computer system
Step 2: Uninstall the HP scanning software
Step 3: Delete all of the remaining files installed by the HP
Scanning Software
Scanjet*
hpsc*
hpsj*
Click File, then click Empty Recycle Bin.
Step 4: Copy the installation files to the Desktop
The drivers for many products can be downloaded free of
charge from our Web site:
1. Go to [I]
Step 5: Restart the computer in Safe Mode
Step 6: Install the HP Precisionscan software in Safe Mode
Note: For more in-depth Safe Mode installation
instruction, visit the following Web site [II].
After the HP Scanjet scanning software has completed
installing, shut down the computer system.
Reconnect the scanner to the computer system using the
USB, parallel or SCSI interface cable, then plug in the
scanners power cord.
Reconnect the scanner power cable to the scanner and
power outlet.
Restart the computer system. The New Hardware prompt
will appear upon restarting and install the necessary
drivers.

[II]
<http://www.hp.com/cposupport/scanners/support_doc/bps03988.html >
The latter URL, includes:
Windows 2000 Professional may experience unusual behavior when
using Safe Mode. For information on this, please reference the
Microsoft(R) support document Cannot Run Windows 2000 GUI-Mode
Setup in Safe Mode (Q243068).
with a link to:
<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q243068>
That, in turn, says:
If you encounter any problems during this phase that require the
system to restart, do not select any Safe-mode startup.
Needless to say, my machine will not start in Safe Mode (but hangs,
rather than producing the error on the MS page).
The HP page does not give advice on what to do in this circumstance.
Following the HP instructions without Safe Mode simply recreates the
position I was in when I started, with err or [2138] when I try to run
the software *even before reinstalling the scanner*.

I and several colleagues are having lots of problems getting older ones to work with W2k - it's not just me! In our case, the software was flaky even with NT4 and needed a pile of patches. Oh well. -- David Pearson
