I spent some time with a group of overseas visitors the last couple of days they are from Prague and have been touring Australia for 6 months. They tell me that after staying in Perth for the past eight weeks they would never come back here again. When I asked them why I opened Pandora's box, wow at first I thought they were joking. They said that of all the places they have been to and it seems they have travelled extensively, they said Perth had the most narrow minded and bigoted people they also said that they felt there was a lot of aggressive people here more than Sydney even. I laughed at the last comment and I rang one of my mates in Sydney to share the joke with him, much to my surprise he said he agreed Perth was the most aggressive city? WTF I said you must be joking but he insisted that he felt there was something wrong here with the way we think, every man for himself and F** the next guy type thing. Both my mate from Sydney and the people from Prague said the same thing almost word for word, that we seem to take delight in tearing others down like its our local sport or something. My mate from Sydney lived in Perth for five years and he said that he thought it was a lovely place but he said he felt people in Perth confuse screwing someone with getting ahead as if one goes with the other. Now when I got of the phone man was I pissed off how could anybody get that idea, after stewing on it overnight what bugs me is maybe they have a point?

People often form opinions based on their own experience. Your survey sample of 4 does not seem to be enough to draw statistically valid conclusions. What you demonstrate is the 'cultural cringe', the observed need for many Australians to immediately ask foreign visitors 'What do you think?" "How do you like Australia?" More confident cultures are less concerned.

I grew up in Canada, and migrated to Perth about 12 years ago. Some things I found "different" about Perth, compared to where I come from: Racial Predjudice- I am sure it exists everywhere, and probably to more or less the same extent. What I found different about it in Perth is people's willingness to say exactly how they felt. Trash talking of other races/cultures that I noticed was not confined to any one group. So called "ethnics" were/are just as happy to but the boot in to other ethnic groups. Your experiences may be different. Turning the streetlights off after midnight (I think they're kept on now) Going to work for a 6 am start, and seeing other traffic on the road. We still don't have Sunday trading. I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing. At the time I left a city of 600,000, and moved to a city of over a million(Perth), yet the overall pace of life seemed to be a lot less hurried in Perth. Last, even though the world is becoming a smaller place, Perth is still a long ways away from anywhere else of comparable size. This has to affect the way that people who live here think of themselves.

Obviously your "mate" in Sydney hasn't lived in the real world or drank in the pubs/night-clubs and hasn't experienced first hand the Lebos , Maoris , Solomon Islanders , not to mention the Vietnamese /Muslim gangs or other street gangs. I would rather live in Perth than in Sydney , it's cleaner and Safer. -- Sandgroper ----------------------------------- Remove KNICKERS for Email steveray@KNICKERSiinet.net.au

"How do you like Australia?" No. What he demonstrates is a willingness to listen to other people's opinions even when he doesn't ask for them. Less gullible people than you don't blindly accept the establishment and media propaganda aimed at blaming us for their cultural cringe. It's they who cringe, because the international (and domestic) image of Australia is of a working class culture (True Blue), and they can't stand that. ----snip---- Ned -- To reply, cut out my nose * Democracy means "the people rule". * and make the met a net. * Fight for the power of assent. *

I doubt it , as you have seem to have lived a sheltered life , there are a lot worse places in Australia other than Perth for aggressive people. If you have not experienced the street life of Sydney , Melbourne , Brisbane or Perth , then you don't know anything. From my experience , I would rather live in Perth , it is safer and there are less gangs roaming the streets. Also walking into a pub / night-club in Sydney by yourself is really a dangerous thing to do , chances are that 80% of the time you would end up in a fight or possibly get mugged. Perth is still a small country town underneath everything and doesn't have all the problems of a big city like Sydney or Melbourne. -- Sandgroper ----------------------------------- Remove KNICKERS for Email steveray@KNICKERSiinet.net.au

One other criticism offered was that for a place with so little experience of the outside world we think we know it all. I hate to admit this because it tars me with the same brush but they are right you have epitomised exactly what they were on about. Today for the first time I sat back and really listened to how people talk and think here there are racial or prejudiced undertones in nearly every conversation, delight in the misfortune of others and a undertow of aggression that is never far away. I guess it is much easier to see it as an outsider looking in than it is looking from the inside. Ill be trying a bit harder from today onwards because as much as I hate to say it I can see it in myself as well :-(
