Hello,

I am looking for a reasonably priced 600x1200 dpi scanner. I need a parallel
port scanner. Which one of the two are better? I mainly use it for photo
scanning. I am looking for good color accuracy, high resolution. Speed is
not such a problem.

UMAX 1220P

CANON FB610

Any known problems of the two?

Anyone has got better ones to suggest?

Thanks.

Another brand to look at is the Optic Pro 9636T Scanner, it has 600x1200dpi
as well as a Transparency adapter which you can scan slides and negatives.
RRP is $299 for it.

Try looking at Info Tech FB750. 600x1200 optical ( 9600 interpolated ) with
great tech support(even 3 years after the purchase of my original SE6B)

I've seen a review by C/NET saying that the Optic Pro 9636T has one of the
worst image quality of the scanners in the price range. Apparantly the
slightly more expensive Canon FB610 is much better.

I bought the Microtek Scanmaker E3 and it has been the easiest part of my PC
to install and maintain (its also parallel). It comes with some pretty good
software like Kai's Photo Soap. I bought mine about 6 monthes ago for about
$350 and it's well worth the money.

I've got the Umax 1220u (same scanner, different interface). I find the
bundled software to be thoroughly lame. The Caere OCR software is
ancient 16-bit fare with dreadful accuracy, the Presto Pagemanager has a
number of annoyances with trying to customize it, and the Adobe
Photodeluxe won't let you have more than one scan open at a time (pretty
lame when you're trying to combine two scans of something that didn't
fit, or you're comparing two scans etc.).

If you've got your own softare for editing, then that's a different
story. The scanner seems to function fine. Some debate over whether it
really is 36-bit, or whether it's 30-bit emulating 36-bit, but you've
got to dig into the scanner newsgroup for that.
