I keep getting this [LINK32 Error] when I try to compile my bcb6 project using bcb 2007. I can't find the lib anywhere, even in the old bcb6 directories. Can anyone cast any light on this please.

Primary culprits are a #pragma link in your code, it being in the LIBS or SPARELIBS section of your project file (open the project file in notepad to check), or being added in as a comment from a static library you are linking in (it will need to be rebuilt). -- David Dean (CodeGear) Lead C++ QA Engineer

Thanks for the reply David. I've searched all project files and the myapp.cbproj file for "STLPMT" without success. Anywhere else I might find the reference to it? What I can't understand is how the project compiles OK under BCB6 when I can't find the STLPMT.LIB anywhere on the hard drive. Try sysinternals FileMon program and filter for *STLPMT*, you ought to at least be able to find out where the tools think they're finding it... dhoke, where do I find sysinternals FileMon? David, I'm a bit lost. I don't have any libs of my own in the project so I can only assume it belongs to 3rd party software. The only one I've added is the core lab MyDAC components but, as they're 2007 specific, I'd assume they're already built in bcb 2007. Thanks dhoke. It seems Filemon and Regmon have been replaced by a single exe called Process Monitor http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx I downloaded it and restricted it to monitor files from my project directory. After 'making' the project I checked the list but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. There's no shortage of NAME NOT FOUND results due to it searching the path and there's a lot of temporary files etc. A nice bit of software but I'm none the wiser at the moment. The only piece of my own code associated with libraries is contained in a file that defines new components (which I've reinstalled using bcb2007). That package has the following 'Requires' list bdertl.bpi dbrtl.bpi rtl.bpi vcl.bpi vcldb.bpi Anyone know if any of them use STLPMTI.LIB? Although, if they do, I can't understand why I was able to install the components in the first place.

I eventually got my app to work by opening a new project and adding the files one by one to it. I tried the same thing with a second project but when adding the 5th file I'm back to the "Unable to open file STLPMT.LIB" linker error. The strange thing is, the file that causes the error has almost identical #includes and #pragmas as the 4th file which caused no linker error. They differ only in that the 5th file has a line #include <values.h> in it. The only other difference is that the class defined in the 5th file is derived from the class defined in the 4th file. Does any of this give a clue as to where the need for this non existent STLPMT.LIB comes from?

There's also a warning given for the 5th file which is [BCC32 Warning] values.h(28): W8017 Redefinition of 'MAXINT' is not identical ????

I've removed any code requiring <values.h> and removed <values.h> from the includes but the link error still occurs. What I'm left with is that the file that causes the error now has identical #includes and #pragmas as the 4th file which causes no linker error. I'm assuming any 'need' for STLPMT.LIB is from one of the #includes or #pragmas as the rest of the 5th file is just standard c++ code. So why does the 5th file seem to 'require' STLPMT.LIB while the 4th file doesn't. As I said, the class defined in the 5th file is derived from the class defined in the 4th file. If it isn't something to do with that I can't think of anything else.

If you get unresolved externals at link time it will tell you what module needs them. Regards, Lee

Thanks Lee, that certainly sounds worth a try if I can manage to create the lib. "tlib stlpmt.lib" doesn't return any error from command prompt but doesn't create the lib. The bcb6 help on tlib says to create a lib add files to a non-existant lib BUT "tlib stlpmt.lib + SomeObjectFile" doesn't create anything either (again, no error is returned). Try it this way:
Find an object file on your drive. Use it in the command line to create the
library.
tlib /C stlpmt.lib +objname.obj
Or use wait.obj which I have posted in the borland.public.attachments group.
It is only 268 bytes.

I am suprised that any of them worked at all. When using long file names with embedded spaces enclose the item in quotes. When applying a '+' operator to what follows, do not put a space between them. The duplicate symbol warning you show suggests that one of the previous commands somehow managed to create a library of that name. . Ed, I've discovered the "invisible files" are down to vista. Only after I right clicked tlib.exe in explorer and ticked 'Run as administrator' did the created lib's start to appear. It also appears that if you do a file search on drive c: in vista, the program files folder is not searched. I despair. Hmmm, that's interesting. I tried it out before I posted to double
check. Using "tlib anyname.lib" generates an empty library for me.
[C:\test]tlib anyname.lib
TLIB 5.1 Copyright (c) 1987-2007 CodeGear
[C:\test]dir
Volume in drive C is unlabeled Serial number is 8cdd:4a9f
Directory of C:\test\*
1/25/2008 11:35 <DIR> .
1/25/2008 11:35 <DIR> ..
1/25/2008 11:35 1,024 anyname.lib
1,024 bytes in 1 file and 2 dirs 8,192 bytes allocated
Trying to remove a module should also work, ie. tlib anyname.lib - bogusname.
Regards,
Lee

Prior to running tlib.exe as administrator it didn't. All seems well now, the commands are working as they should and the file is showing in the correct folder. I've now managed to create the empty STLPMT.LIB. The linker errors (pasted below) aren't exactly informative. Do they give any clues [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TShellFavoritesNameSpace::BeforeDestruction()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TShellFavoritesNameSpace::InitServerData()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TShellFavoritesNameSpace::InvokeEvent(int, System::DynamicArray<System::OleVariant>&)' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TShellFavoritesNameSpace::Connect()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TShellFavoritesNameSpace::Disconnect()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TCppShellUIHelper::BeforeDestruction()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TCppShellUIHelper::InitServerData()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TCppShellUIHelper::Connect()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TCppShellUIHelper::Disconnect()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TCppShellWindows::BeforeDestruction()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TCppShellWindows::InitServerData()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TCppShellWindows::InvokeEvent(int, System::DynamicArray<System::OleVariant>&)' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TCppShellWindows::Connect()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TCppShellWindows::Disconnect()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TCppInternetExplorer::BeforeDestruction()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TCppInternetExplorer::InitServerData()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TCppInternetExplorer::InvokeEvent(int, System::DynamicArray<System::OleVariant>&)' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TCppInternetExplorer::Connect()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TCppInternetExplorer::Disconnect()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ [ILINK32 Error] Error: Unresolved external '__fastcall Shdocvw_tlb::TCppWebBrowser::InitControlData()' referenced from C:\PROGRAM FILES\CODEGEAR\RAD STUDIO\5.0\PROJECTS\MYAPP\DEBUG\MYDM.OBJ

Adding another cpp file to the app has generated a new set of linker errors. These are even more puzzling as I can't see how they can be down to me. If I try to build the entire app (i.e. with all files added) the above 8 errors are returned. Can anyone decipher them for me?

I managed to get rid of the 8 errors by removing all includes and pragma links relating to shadocvw (all of which must have been auto generated by the bcb6 ide). Presumably these aren't neccessary in bcb2007 as the app did build ok. If I remove the empty 'dummy' stlpmt.lib file I get the original error though so, while I'm up and running, there's still something not quite right. Thanks to all who helped particularly Lee as without his dummy stlpmt.lib suggestion I'd have given up by now.
