IB6 slow to connect

I'm using InterBase 6 with Delphi 6 to develop. For some reason, whenever one of my applications first connects to the database, InterBase makes me wait for a long time (sometimes more than a minute) while it does who-knows-what. Can anyone please tell me why this happens, what InterBase is doing and/or how I can speed up the process of connecting?

What operating system is InterBase running on? Does the machine IB is running on have a hyperthreaded CPU or multiple CPUs? The basic problem is that you are running a six year old out of date product that does not support some of the new features of more modern PCs. -- Bill Todd (TeamB)

The machine I'm testing it on (which takes even longer to conntect - about 15 minutes!!) has a single processor: AMD Athlon(tm)XP 1800+ 1.50 GHz 224 MB of RAM What does "hyperthreading" mean? >The basic problem is that you are running a six year old out of date >product that does not support some of the new features of more modern >PCs. You're probably right about that, but the thing is, I'm not even asking IB to do anything yet. It is the process of connecting that is taking so long. Once connected, IB runs fine and executes queries at a reasonable speed. What could be the reason for this initial delay? What does IB do on connect that takes so long?

Hyperthreading is a feature of many new CPUs that makes a single processor appear to be two processors and allows faster processing when multiple threads or processes are running. IB 6 is not hyperthreading aware and one of the results is long connect times. The only known solutions are 1) disable hyperthreading in the system's BIOS and 2) upgrade to a current version of IB. If you use the current version of IB connections will be virtually instantaneous. IB 6 also has a slow connection on Windows Server 2003 due to a change Microsoft made in the TCP/IP stack. The only fix for this is upgrade to a current version of IB. -- Bill Todd (TeamB)

All right, fair enough. But what I am really interested to know is *what* IB is doing on the first connection. All subsequent connections to the database go relatively smooth, but the first connection can take as long as half an hour. Is it performing a database sweep, garbage collecting? It is almost as if IB configures itself for access on the first connection. If I restart the server, the first connection again takes this long, but then not again until the server is restarted. What does IB do?

Try disabling it and see if that fixes your connection speed problem. Dan

The first connection is slow and all subsequent connections are fast. I have no knowlege of the details of the TCP/IP problem. I have been told that it affected other programs besides InterBase as well. > > Is it performing a database sweep, garbage collecting? It is IB tring to establish a connection with Microsoft's buggy TCP/IP stack. If you don't believe me search the newsgroup archives. You will find a vast number of posts about this problem when it first surfaced. -- Bill Todd (TeamB)

The connection turns out to be much faster if IB uses WinSock 2. I can't recall ever seeing the reason why, but the move to WinSock 2 fixed the problem. -- Craig Stuntz [TeamB] . I have already tried that and have seen no discernable difference. But thanks for the tip, Dan.

Look, I'm a bit lost... What are you actually saying I should do, guys? Look, no matter what computer I run IB on, it takes anything from 10 to 25 minutes to establish the first connection. All connections thereafter are fast. I do not believe that hyperthreading is the issue here. If I understand correctly, hyperthreading is a feature of newer PCs and operating systems. If this is the case, it does not apply to me. I find it hard to believe that I am the only person using IB to have run into this problem. Surely, there must I be something simple I am doing wrong, or forgetting? If this really is about the TCP/IP stack bug, is the only option left to me to upgrade to IB 7?

That is the only way to get instantaneous connections. There are several issues: o Hyper-threading -- fixed in IB 7, work around it in earlier versions by disabling hyper-threading in the BIOS setup. o System restore -- useless, mostly; just turn it off. o Second and subsequent connections slow -- bug in IB 6 and earlier, fixed in 7 o Winsock 1 vs. winsock 2 -- I think the issue with Winsock 1 being slow started in Server 2003, but I can't remember for sure. IB 7 uses Winsock 2, with earlier versions the only workaround is to use an earlier OS. So you can work around some of the issues, but not all of them. -- Craig Stuntz [TeamB] . Well, thank you very much for the many helpful reponses. I'll see what I can do, then. It seems in the end, though, I'll have to abandon IB6. Doumo!

Hi Stephan, I has a similar problem before, IB6 in a Windows 2003 server in an IBM server, it's very slow, my fix is, I changed all the workstations that need to connect to the server from dhcp assigned IP to static IP, and it's fast now, don't know if this applies to your situation.
