Texas: Charter Communications SUCKS! (cont.)

The City Council of Ft. Worth has actually fined Marcus Communications in
the past for ineptitude and poor customer support.
Dejavue anyone!!!???

My situation persists.
Here's the latest poop!
Tech came out (two hours late) Saturday (8/8/99). Said new brand of modem
had JUST been released that morning and that was why he was late. LIE!
Replaced old LanCity modem with new Gen. Inst. modem. and assigned different
IP and subnet mask?????
The modem stopped working the following morning and I've been down since.
Well, not completely.
Interesting thing, I can get aroung using my clunky W95 portable (very same
IP config) but my NT desktop won't even ping the gateway address.
I AM NOT USING PROXY, TWO NICS OR IN ANY WAY TRYING TO GET AROUND THE "ONE
PC/IP" HOME.COM RULE. I AM CONSIDERING A LAW SUIT THOUGH.
It's as though some self appointed tin-badge Charter WAN admin has decided
that all NT users are pirates and their MAC addresses are to filtered
straight into the TCP/IP trash can.
I'm expecting a call from home.com's executive offices Monday morning and
they're going to catch an ear full.
Meanwhile, I'm installing a tri-boot, W95-NTWS-NTS configuration, on the
dysfunctional desktop.
Stay tuned!!

Gosh I hate Charter!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Willey (4.0 MCSE, A+, CCNA)

=======================================================
Finally, somewhere to vent my frustration with the crappy Charter @HOME
cable
service!

Ron, you are fortunate. I had the same problem Willey had. ONE WEEK to get
out
and replace my failing modem.
Short synopsis:
- Got service in May
- I was running Windows NT with 2 NICS, 1 to Modem and 1 to my network.
Running
Wingate with no problems.
- Service worked fairly bullet-proof up until about 7/26.
- Called Charter to schedule service. EVERYTIME I call it is at least a 30
minute
hold time. They told me they could schedule someone to come out on 8/4! I
bitched
to no avail.
- Cable modem spontaneously started working on 7/31 in the afternoon. It
died
again on 8/1 in the morning.
- Called on Monday 8/2. They said they could have someone out on 8/3.
- Tech came out (scheduled for 1:30 - 5:30, showed up at 5:40). Replaced
old
LanCity modem with new Gen. Inst. modem. After taking about 20 minutes to
register, the modem worked until I went to bed at approx. midnight.
- The modem was working in the morning of 8/4, but by the time I got home
from
work, it had stopped working.
- I called service and after holding for the 30 minutes, was told that my
"Frequency was too low" and they would have someone out to check it at the
"junction box" within 24-48 hours.
- It still wasn't working when I got home on Thur. 8/5. I had noticed that
the
modem was registered on the network and I could actually ping my gateway and
several other addresses around my gateway, but I could not ping my DNS. I
called
again. I was on hold for 30 minutes, yakked with "Level 1" for 30 minutes
where he
took me through the obligatory script and finally gave up and sent me to
"Second
Level". I was on hold for ANOTHER 30 minutes before the "senior tech" came
on. I
explained to him that my modem was working, I could ping the gateway, but
that
nothing was working because I couldn't ping any of the DNS. I was on the
phone for
an hour with him trying various things (I had already tried), and came up
empty.
Then they started asking the "excuse" questions to try and put the blame on
me.
"Do you have more than one NIC?" - Yes. "Are you running anything on the
machine
like a proxy server?" - Well, yes Wingate, but I've been running this way
for
months with no problems. "Well, we can't support you if you are doing
that". What
a load of crap. They can't fix THEIR problem, so they put the blame on me.
- Tonight, I'm going to connect it to a generic WIN98 machine so they will
have no
excuses.

Their service sucks, so @home is great when it works, but if it breaks, good
luck
getting it fixed.

James,
Same here... I'm in H314 (the number of my node) in N. R. H. and we were
down the same time as you and yes it is great when it works but ...
I have called and called, they send out a line tech and he checks the line
and all his stuff is ok so it must be on the main Charter end modem... they
say it's in the field end so the line tech replaced the node #H314 and it
helped but I still lose sync way too often... so I called again and we will
see. I have friends in Haltom City and they don't have half the problems I
have...

Interesting. This is very similiar to the problem I've been having since they
replace my LanCity with Gen. Inst. modem (I thought I was getting a good deal
too). It worked for about 6 hours and then went down. Spent 4 hours on the
phone with them over the next two nights trying to figure it out. Then ended up
blaming it on my Windows NT system and two NICs!

The next night, I hooked up my WIN95 machine and it works fine! The exact same
config on my WinNT system wouldn't work either! I finally figured out that they
must be hardcoding my MAC address in the system and they had my WIN95 MAC in
their tables. I changed the MAC address on my WINNT system to match the WIN95's
NIC and viola, TCPIP started working on my WINNT system. HOWEVER, I still
cannot get NT to work as before because I continue to get a "Duplicate network
name exists on the network" so my Networking won't start, only TCPIP. I'm using
the Computer Name that THEY assigned me and it's telling me it's a duplicate.
If I use it on the WIN95 machine it works! They must be doing SOMETHING to
screw us NT users.

They made the mistake of sending me a survey on their tech support! I filled it
out, so we'll see if they get back to me on it. Otherwise, I'm going to
continue pursue getting it put back so I can use NT.

Maybe I'll try contacting the Keller City Council and see about getting them
fined!

Regards,
James

If you hate Charter so much than take your business elsewhere. Can't you
figure it out they don't support NT's.

James,
If your Win95 system is working, and if you set your NT system to look like
the Win95 setup and it works, WHY do you think Charter@Home is at fault? Fix
your NT setup. It's that simple.

Ok James contact someone to fine them.

So when you do fine them, they charge their customers more to recount the
money lost from various fines. Instead of a pissed off company at you,
you'll have 6.4 million pissed off customers at you because you raised their
prices! If you want something done, contact the Better Business Bureau. If
they investigate the situation, and deem it necessary to fine them, we will
all expect better service throughout their nation-wide cable system -- and
possibly a slight raise in price.

Brad

P.S., if they don't support NT...raise hell to MS and the manufacturer of
your cable modem.

That's easy to say, but not easy to DO. Many of us don't HAVE an alternative
wideband option. 'Supporting' NT from the point of view of helpdesk support is
one thing, but ANY OS should work on the system if the TCP/IP is properly
configured.
