Since Epic chose DirectX over OpenGL, is that a sign that the OpenGL consortium
aught to speed up R&D to keep open-source the most practical solution? How
about integrating OpenGL with OpenAL? Doesn't DirectX extend beyond graphics
and sound to include IPs and other technologies? How has open-source come to
lag?

OpenAL is desing to look like openGL, but integrating them? in same lib?
no use for that.
Yes OS lag behind windows for multimedia and game, but that dosent meen
that we need
to create our own _new and non standart api_. Sience GNU is not
Microsoft ther no chance that
they could force videocard maker to suport DirectX11 ;)

I think that thers anought well disinged api out ther to anykind of
development.
And most of them are suported over gnu/Linux, *Bsd, BeOS, MacOs and
win32.

Personaly, why i slound choos MS DirectX when i can use opengl, sdl, ...
and port
my software to all those system.

DirectDraw does not work with OpenGL on all systems.

As far as I am aware there's nothing stopping you using the areas of Direct
X you want (eg sound, input etc.) and still use open gl for the rendering.
