That is what the command line compilers are for.

You can update but you'll have to buy a full release not a renewal.
Renewals are only for the prior versions now. Sorry, but we sent out
lots of fliers informing older owners about this change in policy last
year.

OK, let's be more precise: Is this a fancy way of saying that you can build a CFM-based application that links with CarbonLib and potentially runs on OS versions 8.6 and up, or am I missing something here? I don't blame them for not using the word "Carbon." I blame them for implying that this is a *new* feature of version 7. Haven't I been building these "single applications" with CW 5? Doesn't Apple distribute CarbonLib-based sample apps as CW 4 projects? Cheers, Eric

Getting anything before CW6 to build a Carbon app requires upgrading Universal Headers (pain in the ass) and then you still have to deal with non-Carbonized MSL (pain in the ass). CWP 6 is the first that can reasonably build a Carbonized app. So while I agree with the statement that CWP8 is not the first, saying that CWP4 can do it is really stretching the definition of "can"... meeroh -- The contents of text files in a folder called "Random Signatures" in your Preferences folder are used as random signatures.

FWIW, having shipped a large commercial Carbon application built with pre CW6, I'd have to say neither of those were a big deal. Taking new Universal Interfaces should be a simple matter of keeping them outside of the CodeWarrior tree, and adjusting the access paths appropriately. -- Jim Correia Bare Bones Software, Inc. correia@barebones.com <http://www.barebones.com>

A major reason for using CodeWarrior is that you can write one
Application and this application will run natively on OS X, as well as
8.6 and 9.x . Yes this uses the Carbon API but for a business that is
not as important as having a product that runs native on both Operating
Systems.
We've did the marketing and customer surveys and such and there is a lot
of interest in Mach-O but what businesses and customers want now is
something that runs native seamlessly to the user of that software.
While you can do Carbon with CodeWarrior 6, The changes in OS X made
CodeWarrior 6 hard to use on OS X. CW 7 runs very nicely on OS X as
well as on 8.6 and 9.x

And now less than 4 months after its release, we have to pay another $250/350 to upgrade to v7? Am I the only one who thinks this is a little strange? I could understand charging for the upgrade if we had a working product for a full year, but in many ways, even the official release of v6 seems like a beta. In fact we've had to move to 7EA just to debug under OS X (as most of you know, debugging under OS X with v6 is an exercise in frustration). I'm not complaining about the problems with CodeWarrior -- I understand it must have been a difficult task getting it to work at all under OS X. And I'm willing to work around the difficulties in order to do development under OS X. But as a regular customer of Metrowerks since the bronze/gold days, I personally think that charging a $250/350 upgrade to CodeWarrior 6 owners seems a bit excessive. Anyway, that's one man's opinion...

No, CodeWarrior 6 was released in June of 2000 although a pre-release
version of it was available of at WWDC in 2000.
Because there had been 2 major renovations of OS X since CodeWarrior 6
was released we had a Early Access release of CodeWarrior 7 which worked
on OS X and made this available.

CodeWarrior 6 targeted Carbon development, and allowed people to build
code for OS X relatively easily. CodeWarrior 6 was developed on the
Developers Preview release of OS X. after CodeWarrior 6 was released
Apple released a public release and then a final release and now 4
smaller updates to the final release. Each and everyone of these
Major updates had a significant impact on CodeWarrior.
CodeWarrior 6 has always done exactly what it was advertised to do.
That is allow you to easily port applications to OS X using the Carbon
API. It did this extremely well and with very little bug reports when
ran on OS 8.6 and 9.x
CodeWarrior 7 is much more mature it will run on OS X and allow you to
develop on OS X. It is still not perfect on OS X there are Mach-O tools
that need to be fixed. There is a problem with long file names that was
not anticipated as well as the i/o kit But still this is a major
enahncement to CodeWarrior and is not a bug fix or just a simple upgrade
to CodeWarrior 6.

I respect this and when I first saw the price increase I too was
shocked. But once I thought about it, the work that has went into this
and all the added advantages I settled back and understood. I hope you
see this too and the distinction between developing for OS X and
developing on OS X.

The areas that are not supported are some of the more difficult ones to implement: variable length arrays, named array and structure initialization, and complex numbers as a core language element. I don't think the pref panels for CW 7 explicltly include a "C99" switch -- its still pragma only.

We are stating 98% compliance (but that is compliance for the full
standard not just the C99 extensions.
I have a little chart of what we do and do not support if you are
interested.
The library is pretty much C99 compliant it is only some compiler issues
that aren't.
Some things we have no plans on supporting at this time such as variable
arrays and complex types as they are already supported in C++.

I know the two-free-updates program is no more, but I hazily (and probably incorrectly) remember that it had gone to one-free-update instead. Thanks, Tom C. P.S. (Oh yeah, I'm disappointed to see that MFC support is still stuck at 4.2.) We dropped the two bonus updates with Pro in 97 and we dropped the one
bonus update with CodeWarrior 4 in 99.
You are eligible for a renewal price which owners of versions prior to
CW 6 do not get anymore.

Me too, but there are reasons for this being so.

Ok, thanks for the response. Given how little I've used CW this past year I'm leaning against renewing. If I skip two more editions and then pay full price I'm not that far behind, really (I bought both Mac & Win32 editions). This isn't a flame at Metrowerks, just letting you know how I'm making my choices. > >P.S. I hope that MW can update to the newest version of MFC in a future update. Thanks again, Tom C.

I understand and I am going to copy your message and send it to

>CW Mac OS Renewal* before September 10th $249 >CW Mac OS before September 10th $499 >CW Mac/Win Renewal* before September 10th $349 >CW Mac/Win before September 10th $699 Seems kind of expensive to me. Just a guess, but Motorola bean counters couldn't have had anything to do with this. Professional programmers whose companies will buy CW for them may not care. Who will? Small companies, shareware guys, hobbyists, students who no longer officially are, innovators, etc. In short, some of the very people we want developing for Macintosh. Who else will care? Apple Computer and its customers who want to encourage, not discourage, Mac development. I'm not saying Metrowerks doesn't work hard and doesn't deserve compensation for their excellent products. I'm just saying the price is making me hesitate. I've got CW 6.1 and the free development tools that come with OS X. Maybe that's enough for now.

I'm glad you understand.

I understand and when I first saw this I was taken aback too.

One thing to remember is it is not any cheaper to skip a version
anymore. If you skip one it will be almost as much to buy a full
version the next time.
But I do understand, and I also hate paying for updates when I don't
necessarily need the new features.
If you are going to OS X though I highly recommend this and think the
price is cheap compared to the price savings.

Has the Windows SDK help access been improved in this version? When I updated to the v6 Mac/Win combo I really wanted to dump Microsoft VC but I was not able to mainly because of the poor/slow IDE access to the Windows SDK info. The show stopper for me was the lack of a direct, instant linkage between the IDE and the Win32 SDK online reference info. In the Mac version of the IDE I can highlight a Mac API call, do a key stroke shortcut and bang I am looking at detailed API info. This feature did not exist in the Windows version of the v6 IDE. In the Windows version I had to go to the desktop Start menu, slowly sweep the mouse through several folder icon levels to find "Win32SDK" and this only opened a help window. Once the help window appears I still had to click on a 'Help Topics' tab and then manually type the word that I am looking for into an index or find box. That burns up way too much time and energy. The Microsoft Windows API is unintuitive and inconsistent - I have been coding for Windows for five years and I still have to be in the Windows reference material constantly as I code and debug. Unless I can get the same level of instant access to SDK info in the Windows version as in the Mac then I am very hesitant to continue upgrade the combo. You have to have a copy of THINK Reference which details Mac OS Toolbox calls. Then, the key is bound to "Find Reference".

Then, the key is bound to "Find Reference". Oh yeah. I guess I knew that. But THINK Reference is old and costs money. So if you want up-to-date API documentation you still have to go to Apple's ADC site, which is fine but not instantaneous. MS VC++ also has that intellisense thingy. Wasn't Metrowerks working on something comparable: completion of your typing and/or getting a popup of the argument types when you hover your mouse over a call?

I don't know I haven't installed the entire package yet but if you write
me towards the end of the week I will let you know for sure.

It should have been there, it was before but CW 6 had lots of problems
With internactive help.
I appreciate your feedback on this. And drop me a line in a few days
regarding the Win32 API help.

Are you running under OS X or 9. If you are running under 9, then
there were some conflicting applications that made it seem so slow.
If you are under OS X then I never seen it that slow but yes there were
some lags and that was fixed. I find the editor in OS X to be rather
zippy on my PowerBook.
