It is with great pleasure that I am able to announce the release of
CodeWarrior Development Tools for Mac OS and Windows v9

Metrowerks' combined package - CodeWarrior for Mac OS and Windows,
Version 9, gives users all of the capabilities of the stand-alone
CodeWarrior for Mac OS and CodeWarrior for Windows products within a
single package. With this product, developers can take advantage of
developing C/C++ applications that target Classic Mac OS, Mac OS X or
Windows operating systems using a single integrated development
environment.

The CodeWarrior IDE has everything you need in one easy-to-use tool
suite: an advanced project manager, build system, source code editor,
code completion for C, C+ +, compilers, linkers, debuggers, class
browser, and more.

Here's a list of the features available in CodeWarrior Development Tools
for Mac OS and Windows v9.

1. Synchronization of Mac and Windows Pro 9.2 product:
   a. Truly cross platform development support with shared project
files in a common IDE version (V5.5.1);
   b. Build chain including compiler front-end technology,
assemblers and MSL runtime libraries are common to both Macintosh and
Windows products.
   c. Introduction of Mac & Windows Pro 9 combination product -
order once and get tools for both platforms.

2. Automated licensing web servers allow more flexible licensing
options and improved customer relations.

3. Debugger Features:
   a. New profile and trace view integrated into the debugger.
   b. An improved breakpoints window (allows saving breakpoints
between sessions, grouping types of breakpoints, and naming a
breakpoint);

4. Improved CodeWarrior build tools:
   a. Faster compiler build speeds.
   b. Higher performance from compiled applications.
   c. Advanced C99 standards compliance:
      i. C99 variable length arrays.
ii. Support for many non-standard GCC language extensions.
   d.      C99/ISO C++98 feature for Unicode/Multi-byte source files
allows the use of non-ASCII characters in literals and identifiers.
   e. Tracking of include file guard macros.
   f. Instance manager tracks templates and doesnt recompile them
which improves compiler speed.
   g. Include file capitalization.
   h. New preprocessor panel.
   i.      A portable C++ Library Object FormatC.
   j. Support for CodeTEST instrumentation.
   k. Support for disabling specific warnings.

5. General CodeWarrior Development Studio Features:
   a. Auto code formatting including auto-indents and other typical
style guide formatting so code is formatted as you type;
   b. Text searching options to include/exclude comments from
searches;
   c. Improved code completion now supporting templates and
compiler PRAGMAs.

Currently the website and online store don't say anything about an
academic version. Is an academic version going to be available of
this?

Does the windows package contains the CFM command line cross compilers?!
We'd like to compile our MacOS CFM sourcecode on windows with makefiles.

Note that this is just a bundle of the Mac and Windows version of CW
DS 9.2, not a new version of CW DS. It is to be expected that it will
have exactly the same features as CW DS 9.2. So unless the CW DS 9.2
update contains optimisation for the PPC 970, this bundle won't
either.

These are Windows hosted tools that generate code for Windows.

There currently is none. As you probably know, I can't comment on
future products.

I might mention that a 9.2 patch of CW for Windows is to come out in a
few weeks, but it does not have any G5 specifics.

No, use the command line tools from CW 8 if you need that. There just
wasn't that much change in PEF. If you don't have CW 8 and buy CW 9 I
can send you the command line tools.

By the way there is no Java tools either.

Hmm, currently the online store does not list it (March 2nd, 9:34 GMT)
and there does not seem to be any other sign of it on the website yet.

I'm told they won't have it ready until the end of the week. The
product manager had surgery and this has cause some of the burearacy to
get delayed.

Dear Ron,

I did indeed manage to order the academic version of the tools. And
they did arrive today. So far, so good. However, what I paid for
shipping is far from acceptable!

First I can only select FedEx International shipping for a "tiny" fee
- US$14.10. Does not sound too much, now does it? Well, upon arrival I
had the expected 16% value added tax ready, and was surprised that I
not only pay tax for the import (as expected), but that FedEx also
charges 8.35 Euros of administartion fee for this service. So, in
total I paid: US$75 for the CW Pro 9 Academic, and US$21 for shipping.
Thus, I paid an additional 28% of the sales price for shipping of
just a half pound of stuff!!!

I frequently order English books and DVDs at Amazon.com for shipping
to Germany. They use regular airmail. It takes seven to ten days, but
I pay just US$9 (US$4.49 per book plus US$4.49 per shipment) for a
single five pound book or US$7 for a single DVD (US$ 2.49 per DVD).
And I don't have to pay some odd FedEx administration fee for
processing by the postal service either!

Given that I waited many month until the CW 9 academic version was
available, waiting another five days for it to arrive via regular
airmail would not have killed me. In conclusion, I am *happy* with
the product and the support, but *not* with the hassle to get
up-to-date versions. I seriously get the impression that Merowerks
sales management has zero interest in international or academic
end-users. Maybe you should mention to your sales management that
there are now three compilers available for the Mac...

I don't use the other two compilers for various reasons, but if
Metrowerks does not want to sell their products to me in a fair manner
and at the same time (or only a bit later) as commercial versions are
available, next time I need to upgrade, I will first look elsewhere
before I buy another upgrade from Metrowerks!

We can't compare software shipping fees to books since Books are
classified differently and have a lower rate. Also Amazon.com has such
a high volume they can shop around and get lower fees from the various
shippers. What I can do is forward you complaint to our sales
coordinator to Digital River and we can file a suggestion/complaint with
them that way. Perhaps Digital River (the fullfillment house that
does the collecting and shipping for us) is not aware that FedEx was
charging twice.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Ron

What is the status of Java within CodeWarrior? I don't see it
mentioned, and I have read a couple of posts that imply CW will no
longer be supporting Java.

I have just gotten my team converted from JBuilder to CW. They are not
going to be happy if they now learn that CW is dropping support for
Java... :-(

In the thread with subject CodeWarrior java compiler question

MW Ron states
"CodeWarrior is wrong. Basically it needed a new compiler and we put
bandages on the old one until it just was not suitable. This is one of
the reasons we did not have Java Plugins with CW 9."

The reason I never upgraded to CW 9 was because of the lack of Java. And
now based on that comment from Ron it would appear to be that the reason
was that MW did not have sufficient resources to come up with a new
compiler.

There were several postings about htis, including mine, at the time that
CW 9 came out. Perhaps yo missed them.

Looks like you might have to use XCode, which is pretty good.
I'll look at MW again when they offer the complete package of C,C++,Java
the way they used to. In the meantime I do all of my work using XCode, I
guess because i'm too lazy to use two different development IDE's.

Pity.... because I've been a longtime fan of CW.....

respect....

What I find really annoying is that Ron has been beating around the bush
regarding Java support (and Windows support, until CW 9 was announced)
since CW 9 for OS X was announced. Without a Java compiler in sight,
there is not doubt that my department is going to drop CodeWarrior and
move to a combination of Visual C++ and JBuilder as soon as the semester
is over. No matter how much I may prefer CW over VC, the main
justification for using CW in our labs has always been that students
would have the same environment for their Java-based introductory
courses and C++-based advanced courses.

Regards,

jyh.

I have been a fan of CodeWarrior since around 1990, when the first
version came out. Since the late 90's I have convinced several others
to use based on the prospect of using the same IDE for both Mac and
Windows and for both C++ and Java.

If CW is dropping Java, then I will have no choice but to abandon CW.
it is a real shame, as I think it is vastly superior to JBuilder, but
without Java it just isn't much good to me at all... :-(

Agreed. But let's remember that Ron is only the messenger and he is not
responsible for policy decisions. Also that Motorola/Metrowerks has to
make choices of the resources they apply to various projects.

I'm willing to cut them some slack but if there is no Java plugin for 9
or 10 then I think MW will lose quite a few customers.

Anyway I'll wait and see.....

I really don't care who the messenger is. Though MWRon has done a heck
of a job for several years, if his company no longer makes a useful
product, I have no choice but to move on.

Without Java, there is no Codewarrior for me. Java accounts for 90+% of
my work for the past 4 years.

Until FreeScale IPO is over I can't say (or even hint) as to what the
future of Metrowerks is. I can say what the short plans are. Up until
January I expected a Java plugin to be available in this quarter. That
is why my comments were "beating around the bush" we have legal
restrictions about this.

There obviously won't be any Java plugins this quarter, and I don't see
any thing for the next quarter at this time. I still can't comment on
the long term plans. I really wish I could.

What IPO is this? MW is owned by Motorola, isn't it? Are you being
spun off, or is this something else?

The argument is that two companies, one centered on cellphones and
the other on semiconductors, could attract more investment than
one large company with a mixed mission. Whether this is the case
or not is questionable. More certain is that this is an activity
performed by the managerial class, giving them something to do,
and will result in a net increase in the number of managers.

Metrowerks is a wholly owned subsidiary of Motorola and is under the
managment of the semiconductor product sector division (AKA Motorola
SPS). Motorola has decided to spin this Semiconductor Product Sector
division off into a separate corporation and it will be listed on the
stock exchange and have an initial price offering when it is launched.
Metrowerks will be part of the new corporation.

IK=&filenum=&State=&SIC=&owner=include&action=getcompany

Because of this IPO we (as part of the new FreeScale Semiconductor
Corporation) are not allowed by the SEC to reveal any leading
disclosures for something over 3 months away.

Thanks. That clears up the situation.

So from this one can come to the conclusion that anything not
revealed/discussed is at least 3 months away

Not for everything, marketing actually likes to keep discutssions to
the current quarter. So you can't bet the farm on it... but it is a
good rule of thumb.

Taking another look, I think the policy in most cases is just 30 days
advance disclosure. And no "roadmaps" at all.
