I have d'ld the postscript installer but it won't run at all. I have even managed to extract the files in the exe but double clicking on setup.exe doesn't fire anything up. What could I be doing wrong?

What specific file are you trying to install - and why?

As a starter, have you got a complete download? The file I got was called 'winsteng.exe' and was 7,560KB.

Yep, winsteng.exe was the file. I know have the whole file because I was able to extract all the files by using RAR but nothing happens when I double-click on setup.exe. I have 2 PCs both running XP Pro. Same result on both.
Is there some other way of getting a postscript driver to run with distiller 3.0?

Distiller 3.0 in Windows XP? That's taking a chance. But you might be
lucky.

Why not use the PostScript driver that comes with Windows NT - Add
Printer icon?

Adobe is not aware of any such problem as described on this thread. Although Windows XP comes with the identical driver that comes with the Adobe Universal PostScript Printer Driver Installer 1.0.6, the Adobe installer does provide an easy way to associate any arbitrary PPD file with the driver, a facility that does NOT exist with the Microsoft "Add Printer" wizard.

Most problems that we are aware of in terms of installation have to do with attempting to run the installer as anything but a user with FULL "Administrator" privileges. (Note that some "IS" types muck around with their users' registries such that the Administrator account doesn't really have full Administrator privileges!)

Yes, I have tried it as Administrator but again a double-click on setup.exe or winsteng.exe produces no result. Nuthin' in the event viewer either. Is there another way?

You should concider to install WinXP again. Choose 'repair' to hold
old configurations.

> You should concider to install WinXP again.

With all due respect, that advice may be the only solution,
but in general, re-installing the OS (of all software!) is
the very *last* thing you should attempt.

Coming from the UNIX/Mac world, I find it almost amusing
how people go for re-installing software on Windows as soon
as a problem occurs. Especially from the viewpoint of learning
your software and computer system, the best way is to try to
trouble-shoot and isolate problems. *If* nothing else works,
or if you're on a deadline, re-installing may be the only way.

In the case discussed, perhaps the downloaded file was corrupt.
Perhaps the file privileges are wrong. Perhaps the disk or the
TEMP area is full. Perhaps there's some service, program or
virus running that interferes with the EXE file in question.

Try cleaning out temporary or old files from your disk, empty
the recycle bin, defragment the disk, reboot the computer,
and close all other programs and start-up utilities. Scan your
entire disk for viruses and then temporary turn off things
like automatic virus scanners.

I have the same problem with the installation. If I look in my task list I find that ntvdm.exe has started and then nothing happens. If I try to start the setup.exe again another instance of ntvdm.exe starts and takes 99 to 100% of the CPU.

I downloaded winsteng.exe which is a zipped executable that extracts the installation files. Running winsteng.exe or extracting the setup files out of winsteng.exe and running setup.exe give the same results. Since this is a installshield package, I went to the installshield site and updated all of my installshield files. I have tried installing it in safe mode. I have tried msconfig and disabled startup files. I have verified that all of my 16 bit subsystem files are there and not corrupt. I have made sure Norton Antivirus was disabled (and all of the other TSR programs I could disable).

Nothing works.

I have also noticed that some of the time the installation triggers something spooling to the PDFMaker printer spool then crashes.

Is there any way I could install this manually, i.e. 'Add New Printer'?
It wants an inf file.

Also, this install does work on other XP PC's I have tried it on. There has to be a conflict with some software on my PC, but I can't find it.

Come to think of it, a few years ago we heard of a problem in which the Adobe Universal PostScript Printer Driver Installer failed IF the user had also installed the driver software for a certain European ISDN modem card for their PC. The workaround was to uninstall the ISDN software, run the PostScript driver installer as many times as necessary to setup printers, and then run the ISDN software installer. The conflict seemed to be not in any Adobe code, but with the old version of the installer used for the driver (this installer supports versions of Windows back to Windows'95).

This "ISDN card" problem ring a bell for anyone in this thread suffering from a failure of the installer to run properly?!?

So does anyone know of a manual way to install the PS drivers that doesn't rely on 16 bit install programs?

Yes, get or make the proper ".inf" files and use the infamous "Add Printer" wizard.

I created an inf file based on the one you listed and the files I extracted out of the Generic PS driver from adobe and came up with this:

[Version]
Signature="$Windows XP$"
Class=Printer
Provider=%MS%
LayoutFile=layout.inf

; The Manufacturer sections lists all of the manufacturers
; that we will display in the Dialog box

[Manufacturer]
"Adobe Systems"

; Model sections. Each section here corresponds with an entry listed in the
; [Manufacturer] section, above. The models will be displayed in the order
; that they appear in the INF file.

[Adobe Systems]
"Generic PostScript Printer" = DEFPRTR2.PPD

;
; Installer Sections
;
[DEFPRTR2.PPD.NT]
CopyFiles=
DataFile= DEFPRTR2.PPD
DataSection=PSCRIPT_DATA_NT

;
; Data Sections
;
[PSCRIPT_DATA_NT]
DriverFile= PSCRIPT5.DLL
HelpFile= PSCRIPT.HLP
ConfigFile= PS5UI.DLL

;
; Copy Sections
;

[PSCRIPT_NT]
PSCRIPT5.DLL
PSCRIPT.HLP
PS5UI.DLL

[DestinationDirs]
DefaultDestDir=66000

[Strings]

I get an error when I try to add a new printer with it:

I just installed a printer with your copy of the INF file with
another PPD. No error appeared.

Don't take the Generic Postscript PPD. You don't need it.
It has only a 300dpi resolution and is useless.
Take the PPD of your printer.

I'm not using a printer, I'm printing directly to a PDF file.

I am having issues printing to adobe distiller or writer in our programming and it was recommended to me to use the winsteng.exe file to install the 'Generic Postscript Printer' driver. However it will not run on my PC because it is a 16 bit installshield program. The PPD I listed came out of that install package.

Acrobat comes with its own PPD. It is found in
c:\progam files\adobe\acrobat 6.0\distillr\xtras

Thanks,

I created a inf file pointing to a copy of the Adist5.ppd file and it works great. I have learned a lot about printer installations. After looking through the PPD files that the winsteng.exe uses and the Adist5.ppd, using the Adist5.ppd is better. And I don't have to worry about the 16 bit installer program not working. I hope this will also help Neil who started this thread.

Thanks again,

Tom

After having used the AdobePS installer (german version winstger.exe) pretty often on my XP Pro computer, today it didn't run anymore. Either the ntvdm process hangs or the setup program chrashes with an error message about an access violation.

My solution for today is: copy the installer and the ppd files to a local directory and run the setup as the local Administrator.

Hints for Adobe's analysis:

I used to install printers using my normal working domain account (which has domain administrator rights!). There has never been a problem until now. That could probably have something to do with Microsoft's efforts to make Windows more secure. I do install the security patches regularly and recently noticed a change: When I now run a program from any non-local location (even a drive-mapped network share) I get a warning and the question whether to proceed or cancel.

My wish:

Please update your installer to a more recent InstallShield version or another 32 bit basis! The old IS 5 16 bit version is from the last century and definitely outdated! And installing custom ppd files is absolutely essential for PostScript and PDF production...

No problem. Since winistger.exe or wininsteng.exe or whatever for WinXP
installs just the same Postscript driver that has already been installed
by WinXP installation you only need an INF file and can use the Windows
printer installation wizzard.

One INF file is here:

; printer.inf
;

[Version]
Signature="$Windows NT$"
Class=Printer
Provider=%MS%

; The Manufacturer sections lists all of the manufacturers
; that we willdisplay in the Dialog box

[Manufacturer]
"My Manufacturer"

; Model sections. Each section here corresponds with an entry listed in the
; [Manufacturer] section, above. The models will be displayed in the order
; that they appear in the INF file.

[My Manufacturer]
;!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
;replace it by *ModelName (within the PPD) and the PPD name
"My printer" = printer.ppd

;
; Installer Sections
;!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
;replace My printer by *Modelname and printer.ppd by your PPD name
[My printer]
