Which is better ? CD32 + SX32 or CD32 + A1200 ?

Hi, Anyone using CD32+ A1200 setup ? I understand A1200 can use CD32 as a slave drive to fetch files from CD. If a program on the CD is executed from A1200, is it run on CD32, or A1200, or on both ? Can propgram address all the ram on both CD32 and A1200 ? SX32 is indeed a very neat add-on for CD32, but for the cost of a Bare SX32, you can get both CD32 and a A1200 (USED) that has buit-in FDD and keyboard, and more expansion potential. than SX32. the only drawback of the later set-up is that the 2Mb CD32 chip ram may not be shared by the whole system, but A1200 has 2 Mb instead. My only complaint for SX32 is it is too expensive. hope the price will be more reasonable soon. as far as profit of a product is concerned, do not forget $100 x 1000 >> $200 x 100

You can currently purchase a CD32 for around 130-200 from
most mail order companies in the UK.
Add this to the Total price of an SX1 or SX32
SX32 - 240 Inc A1000 Compact Keyboard
SX1 - 220 Inc PC Style Keyboard
Ext Floppy from 20-80 DD & HD
A NEW A1200 costs 399.99 from Amiga Technologies.
and you need a CDROM DRIVE on top of this to access
CDs...
When connecting a CD32 to any other Amiga, file transfer
is really slow. an SX1 or SX32 setup give instant CD access!
I have used the CD32 NetworkCDs 1&2 and when they crash its
a real pain up the backside, having to reboot both machines
and start again....
Its upto you, but in our office we have 3 SX1+CD32s with
4-8Mb and 80-200Mb Harddisks and they work great. We even
have on of the CD32+SX1 connected to the Internet via
a 14.4 modem and Ibrowse and THOR.. it works great, better
than some scummy PeeCEE + Netscape setup.

No but I have used one, and your question is easy enough
even if I hadn't.

Yes, but it unuseably slow except for grabbing files of an
Aminet CD or similar.

It is run on the A1200, as that is the computer you are accessing it
from.

I don't know what propgram is, but it would be pointless addressing
the RAM on the CD32 if you're using the A1200 (and vice-versa)
because of the slow speed.
: SX32 is indeed a very neat add-on for CD32,
Yup, sure is.

The main dis-advantage is not that, but that a Sernet link is little
faster than a 28.8k modem.
: My only complaint for SX32 is it is too expensive.
They cost quite a bit to produce. Most of the controller chips for
FD and HD are in there. Don't think most of it's going to profit.
: hope the price will be more reasonable soon. as far as
: profit of a product is concerned, do not forget
: $100 x 1000 >> $200 x 100
But when the SX32s cost more than 100 dollars to produce, you are
making a loss.

Nope, not at all, and I can tell you why..

Okay, here goes.
If you're using a standard CD32 as a 'slave drive' for any Amiga, not just a
1200, you're making a serial link between the Amiga serial port and the CD32
keyboard/serial port. Then you boot a special CD-ROM for the CD32 and run
software on the other Amiga, to make a link.
This link (generally using the Sernet package) gives around 3k/second transfer
speed (about 6 times slower than floppy disk) and software using it *must* be
OS compliant.
The CD32 is simply a device, so software executed over the link from your 1200
runs on the 1200. The CD32 doesn't have enough RAM to do anything much
anyway.
Programs can't access RAM on both machines. Neither machine has an MMU to
make this possible, and even if they did, the slow transfer speed would mean
you'd be dead before the program had got anywhere.

A bare SX32 is £200. Can you get both machines for £200? Go for it, then.
Don't expect the CD access to be at all fun, though.
The SX32 also has a memory expansion and built-in clock, both of which cost
more with a 1200. It also makes the CD32 an excellent portable machine.

Bollocks, it's not expensive at all. You just have no idea how much it costs
to make 3rd party hardware.
>$100 x 1000 >> $200 x 100
Most CD32s already have SX-1s. Where will these thousands of purchases come
from?

If you use the CD32 as a CD-ROM for the A1200, the program will run on the A1200. As far as I know the CD32 RAM can not be used by the A1200. The CD32 is degraded to a simple CD-ROM. :-))) RH> SX32 is indeed a very neat add-on for CD32, RH> but for the cost of a Bare SX32, you can get both CD32 and a A1200 RH> (USED) that has buit-in FDD and keyboard, and more expansion potential. If you connect CD32 and SX32 you get a complete A1200 that is 100% compatible with the CD32. And you can expand the system with Fast-RAM and a Harddisk. RH> My only complaint for SX32 is it is too expensive. My words, but DCE (manufacturer of SX32) offers a "Ready-to-go-bundle" with CD32, SX32 and keyboard for 598DM. That's not too expensive I think. On second-hand market, you can get a CD32 in less than 70 pound and bare A1200 in less than 150 pound. a new Network CD kit for 30 pound. which will end up around 250 quid. The advantage is that A1200 has the built-in Keyboard and FDD, and the potential for accellerator add-on. and you will have two AGA machine. > When connecting a CD32 to any other Amiga, file transfer > is really slow. an SX1 or SX32 setup give instant CD access! > That is the main advantage of SX32, but you will be stuck in EC020 forever. > I have used the CD32 NetworkCDs 1&2 and when they crash its > a real pain up the backside, having to reboot both machines > and start again....
