Well, for me, this appears to be one of the worst updates from MW in a long time. Update 8.2 to 8.3->goes fine use installer option to open IDE and update MSL Libs->ok rebuild all libraries->fine Now, open release notes for 8.3 in Finder ->launches new copy of IDE [the same file] Most likely, this is just due to how the installer launched the IDE, not really a problem So, quit 'both' IDEs, then open release notes again [all the text files in '8.3 Update Release Notes']. Read first one, hit cmd-w IDE crashes Re-launch IDE, then open all the release notes Read a couple [closing window's as I go along] IDE crashes Now, after removing the Metrowerks folder and com.metrowerks.IDE.plist from my Preferences folder: Either launching the IDE first, then opening all ten 'release' notes files or opening all ten files directly [which launches the IDE], it crashes every time when I close the 5th window. And yes, I'll waste my time sending in a formal bug report... Later, -- David Rehring Psychos do not explode when light hits Senior Software Engineer them, no matter how crazy they are... I wouldn't say that this is one of the worst ones for me, but 8.3 is still giving me problems in Jaguar that I was suffering in previous versions since loading in jag. For some reason, IB won't add new class files to a CW project and I find it rather inconvenient to have to add them in manually. If it's me, I definitely would like to know what I am doing wrong because I would rather be concentrating on programming and not futzing around with the tools. I've already removed all preferences and .plist files and even installed fresh and I still get the same results. jord David Rehring wrote: > Well, for me, this appears to be one of the worst updates from MW in a > long time. > > Update 8.2 to 8.3->goes fine > use installer option to open IDE and update MSL Libs->ok > rebuild all libraries->fine > > Now, open release notes for 8.3 in Finder > ->launches new copy of IDE [the same file] > Most likely, this is just due to how the installer launched the IDE, not > really a problem > > So, quit 'both' IDEs, then open release notes again [all the text files > in '8.3 Update Release Notes']. > > Read first one, hit cmd-w > IDE crashes > > Re-launch IDE, then open all the release notes > Read a couple [closing window's as I go along] > IDE crashes > > Now, after removing the Metrowerks folder and com.metrowerks.IDE.plist > from my Preferences folder: > > Either launching the IDE first, then opening all ten 'release' notes > files or opening all ten files directly [which launches the IDE], it > crashes every time when I close the 5th window. > > And yes, I'll waste my time sending in a formal bug report... > > Later,

This defintitely is one of the best ever it is pure gold I don't knwo
why you are having problems. But there is always ways to foil us so
please do try this again and do a clean install to be sure.

You should not have gotten two version of the IDE open unless you happen
to have two versions of the IDE and even then ...

Please do a clean install and I hate to say it but you may want to trash
the Metrowerks Preferences and rebuild your desktop on OS X too.

You have to touch and rebuild in CW 8.2 but I thought this was fixed.

Well, from doing a fresh install, it seems that the CodeWarrior updaters don't work properly if you rename the IDE. So, I've been using the 8.0 IDE all along, with the various other components being updated properly. This is extremely lame for the installer to succeed, yet not actually perform the update correctly. However, doing the fresh install does appear to resolve the closing issue I had originally. In the Edit Menu - Preferences... General - IDE Extras deselect Use
Default Workspace. That will open what ever you shut down with.

No they worked properly if you rename the IDE, that was the problem.
What you considered correctly and what the designers considered
correctly are two different things :)

I wish if there was a component that didn't install it would say
installation failure and pop up the installer log and save you having to
read through it.

I'm sure you are going to be much happier, I'm really bullish on this
release. It isn't perfect but we did a lot of work on it.

I don't know if touch and rebuild will help in this case. If I create a new Cocoa Application Project and then go into Interface Builder and create a new class (say I create a subclass NewObject from NSObject), when I create the files for the class, they do not get added to the project, despite being asked on the file selector sheet if I want to add them to the Cocoa Debug and Cocoa Final targets. The CWIB.Bundle is installed. I also tested against a fresh CW install updated to 8.3. Is that a little clearer? Even more so, have I not done something that I should have done? jord MW Ron wrote: > > You have to touch and rebuild in CW 8.2 but I thought this was fixed. > Can you send me a better description. > > Ron >

Well I too somehow got two copies of the IDE open. I think it happened when I clicked on CodeWarrior from my dock. I'm not what versions the two copies were. Perhaps the second copy was the old IDE that the installer put into the trash or perhaps the installer opened the IDE in a funky way and confused the Finder. I quickly closed them both, updated my dock shortcut, and haven't had any more problems. One more thing. What should have opened after the install? I thought the build libraries project was supposed to open. For me, only the IDE launched. After I manually opened the libraries project, everything went very smoothly. -EJ P.S. The bullishness, that is... I'm reserving judgement on pure gold. So far the update has worked flawlessly for me. Ran the IDE through a brutal window closing session with no problems and reading your post below, it really sounds like some old version of the IDE could have been the offender. OS X does some unexpected stuff when choosing editors for an open document event... It may be well defined at the code level but I think it's safe to say there are issues when you put the mechanism live on a user's dirty desktop. A tough problem to be fair, keeping that db mapping coherent. It sucks to see MW being vilified there in your post right after this update because they sure have taken a beating over the window close crash (and rightly so). I hope your circumstances are isolated. I have been using 8.3 for the past 8 hours and it hasn't crashed once. Things are looking great. If it keeps going like this, tomorrow I may even screw up the balls to turn on code completion. I also received a special bug fix from MW to fix a linker issue. I found it incredible that they took time to help me out while pounding out something as critical to them as 8.3 - I'm not exactly the head of Microsoft's Mac BU or anything, I'm just a frickin guy and they gave me a special build of the linkers to address an annoying issue that was complicating my build process. My point is that Metrowerks cares about the customers that post on this newsgroup and that is a very good thing. I have to pay Apple Computer $195 before they will even talk to me about an issue. (yeah there are a few ways around that I know). Whether or not 8.3 is pure gold (so far so good though), the support _is_ pure gold and that matters a lot. +jon On 11/15/02 2:40 AM, in article ad65e6c9.0211150240.1f8b63dd@posting.google.com, "EJ" <ec109695@yahoo.com> wrote: > MW Ron <mwron@metrowerks.com> wrote in message > news:<mwron-2E0BF6.17313214112002@enews.newsguy.com>... >> In article <drehring-EB3B5F.13160214112002@shawnews.vc.shawcable.net>, >> David Rehring <drehring@shaw.ca> wrote: >> >>> Well, for me, this appears to be one of the worst updates from MW in a >>> long time. >> >> This defintitely is one of the best ever it is pure gold I don't knwo >> why you are having problems. You must have had two copies of the IDE perhaps like Dave you renamed
on.
The "desktop file" in OS X can be rebuilt by removing the three files
beginning "LS" in "~/Library/Preferences" and restarting Finder.

Cool it probably got confused if you have more than one IDE.

No I was saying that is how it was designed, so that you can't update a

Sorry, you are right, on both accounts, there should be some sort of
install failure message and a list of what was not installed or updated.

I don't think that's true any more as of Jaguar. I think there's something in ~/Library/Caches. I ran into a problem with the update. I did a fresh install of 8.0, then applied the 8.2 update, then applied the 8.3 update. Thereafter, when I double-clicked the IDE icon, nothing happened. I examined the file with Resorcerer and noticed that the bundle bit was not set. After fixing that, the application opened OK. This is under OS 10.2.2.

Yeah, but in Metrowerks' defense I doubt very much it is their code. I've had similiar problems setting up updaters with VISE. VISE really is a tool that survives on the Mac only because it had a virtual stranglehold on the Mac installer market. But don't listen to me; I feel the same way about CodeWarrior on bad days. :)

When IB wants to add the class files to the CodeWarrior project, it just ends up sending an "add files" AppleEvent to the IDE. If the target you're adding the files to does not have a valid filemapping for this class (presumably .m or .mm in this case) then it will fail. Can you send in a bug report and we'll investigate to see if any other problem might be occurring. -- Isaac Wankerl Metrowerks Mac Software Developer

I've noticed in previous updates that same problem. Moreover, I've noticed an intermittent CodeWarrior bug (and filed a report a few months ago) regarding just that subject: it sometimes fails to set the bundle bit of the applications it builds, even though I've set the preference to do that. I don't know if that's ever been fixed, I received no status report after filing the bug. I wonder if that same bug is manifesting here.

I'm pretty sure that previous updates [as in, before the current OS X trend of hardcoding the path and name of applications began], MW updaters did 'find' the IDE by type/creator instead of a relative path/filename. Having used UpdaterVISE myself and the fact that CW currently is a non-bundled PEF application makes it pretty straightforward to 'fix' so that those of us that need to have multiple installations can tell them apart [not run them at the same time, but be able to easily launch the correct one]. Apple got raked over the coals about this for their OS X applications and they seem to be slowly fixing it for some of them... The installer placed a bunch of old files in the trash, including version 5.0 of the IDE. So after the install, I had a copy of CodeWarrior IDE in ~/.Trash/ and in /Applications/Metrowerks CodeWarrior 8.0/. I believe these were the two versions that were launched though I can't be positive. -EJ

One oddity I am seeing after updating to 8.3, rebuilding pre-compiled headers and libraries, under Mac OS X 10.2.2, is that a log file is always created even if the "Log System Messages" is unchecked in the project's settings. You can recreate this problem by creating a project from the "Mac OS C Stationery", then in the "Select project stationery" dialog choose "C Toolbox Mach-O". Build the project, then run the debugger. A log file is opened up for the debugging session even though "Log System Messages" is unchecked in the project's settings. I have updated two different computers to 8.3 and both exhibit the same problem. Looking at the release notes for the debugger I noticed the following entry: "Creating a debugger log file no longer crashes on 10.2." Is this a bug or a feature change to always have logging turned on? Is there any way to turn logging off because I don't want to having logging turned on all the time? Thanks.

When I installed 8.3 and chose the update libraries option it started the IDE and at that point added a new copy of the icon to the dock. I dragged the old icon to the trash and selected "keep in dock" for the new one, and have since emptied the trash so I can't get any more information now. The previous icon was there because I'd picked "keep in dock" at some earlier time, but I've no idea how I'd launched the app when I made that pick (not that I'd expect it to have any effect). Arvan

Right, did this not do this for you previously, I thought it always
did. :)

I'll check, I believe the setting in the preferences is to log system
messages not turn on Logging.

I have a cocoa app in progress. If I double-click one of the nibs and go into IB, then subclass "JoeRandomClass" as "MyJoeRandomClass" then go to Tools->Create Files for classocoa app in progress. If I double-click one of the nibs and go into IB, then subclass "JoeRandomClass" as "MyJoeRandomClass" then 'Create Classes for MyJoeRandomClass', I get a sheet whichd asks me if I want to add the files to both debug and final targets. I agree. They don't get added. I have some fuzzy recollection that it worked way back when, before Jaguar and 8.2, but I only had CW for a short while before the updates came out. It's still broken in 8.3 -Liz
