I have just formatted an AMD 350MHz pc. It was running win98 perfectly however there was too much junk on it. So i gave it the big F. After loading win98se on I have found that the pc doesn't shut down properly. Although it is an AT power supply, I don't get the screen "It is now safe to turn off your computer" All I get is the splash screen Windows is now shutting down. Can anyone please tell me how to fix this problem ??? Thanks in advance Melvin

There is a patch from microsoft, which fixed some shutdown problems. But i found that windows 98 does this 'wont shutdown' thing anyway. if you wait about 30 seconds on the "windows is shutting down' screen, then press the reset button and straight away power off, you are sure that the filesystem is unmounted cleanly (so that it doesnt do a filesystem check "scandisk" next time ) and that you wont power off during a write (because reset will clear things away ) > Thanks in advance > Melvin > >

There's a surprising number of things than can do that. http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm covers them all pretty clearly.

You can check by rebooting with all drives disconnected except the hard drive, then shutting down again. But if that is the case, unfortunately I don't have a solution for it, you'll just have to shutdown from alt-ctl-delete instead (which is my preferred method anyway).

You may not get this one fixed. We tried a shitload of various patches/fixes/solutions on some 98SE machines we had and it never went away, although if the client left it for a minute or three before hitting the power it always came up cleanly, problem was resolved when they were upgraded to XP when they got new machines. Most of the small number of 98SE machines we had never had a problem, but those that did were "immune" to all patching. 98 is infamous for this. With most BIOS's, configured in the right way, you shouldn't see that screen anyway, it should just turn off, but these bastards just always used to hang mid-way through shutdown.

I meant all the things to try, not that its guaranteed to be one of them listed there thats the problem. I had a problem with SE that way myself, and that wasnt eliminated by trying all those systematically. ME did fix it completely.

Under General/Advanced disable fast shutdown. Ms increased the speed of some shutdown routines in Win98 SE and one or more start before others finish, causing the problem. This usually takes care of it. Although Win98 FE usually needs the Fast Shutdown enabled. If this option is missing or ghosted then the patch has been installed. Another cause is an AV program running in the background. If you have one running all the time try disabling that feature, I believe it's a Norton feature. BTW The MS SE shutdown patch is considered a last resort by many. He stated he has an AT supply, these don't turn off all the way, and do require the power switch at the end.

Nah, they all show the final 'safe to turn off' screen on AT machines (and wrongly configured ATX) At least they're supposed to show the screen anyway...

Agreed (and even then the BIOS may need to be configured for it, which it should be by default anyway), but was replying more to "blank"'s comments, he didn't indicate what sort of hardware he had.

Yeah, but that was mostly because they had initially decided that SE was gunna be the last of the Win98 line, changed their mind on that with XP being slower to be available than they had hoped and so ME had a rather shorter life than the others in the Win9x family. Its a very viable product in the Win9x family, tho XP leaves it for dead in quite a few areas, particularly going for a hell of a lot longer between reboots with a system thats left on all the time and used aggressively, particularly with lots of instances of big apps like Access. ME is a complete pain in the arse in that situation with the resources problem that bedevils the entire Win9x family.
