Is anyone else suffering from this or is it just me? Any comments are welcome. I am in Washington State area. I connecting using an internal 56k pci modem. It will only connect at 26.4k (reported by DUN) althought the download speeds suggest I am getting closer to or just over 28.8k. I have tried 3 different ISPs and a number of locations/lines. My modem supports both K56Flex and V.90 and I have tried ISPs offering all three main protocols. Does anyone have experience of this or any suggestions of fixes. Cheers, Julio

saw this same problem on someones else's computer i was working on...changed modems a few times and everything ended up being the phone lines...if they have old equipment in your area...dont ask the exact names i forget...you won't be able to connect any faster Julio Alano <citizenc73@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:Yg502.17549$357.345@news-reader.bt.net... >Is anyone else suffering from this or is it just me? >Any comments are welcome. >I am in Washington State area. It may very well be that your phone line does not support that speed. I read that if the switching station to you phone line is more than three miles away, you'll have problems with speed. I can only connect at 31200 with my modem and my transmit speed is reported at 26,000 and change. Try this site to test your phone line quality. http://www.3com.com/56k/need4_56k/linetest.html You can dial in to their BBS (although it's long distance, you can get the results in a couple of minutes. I have a v.90 modem and dun always reports 26,400.Sysmon reports 26,400 on large transfers,it starts out initially at 3.7 to 4.0 but levels out at 26.4.I would accept this if 26.4 varied on dun at different log in times but it does not. I have tried many .inf files and extra inits but the above is the best I have been able to achieve. I am 1500 cable feet from a digital loop concentrator remote. The remote is connected by 15 miles of fiber to the local terminal co-located with a DMS-10 central office switch. The remote and local terminal of the DLC each have D/A conversion and the switch converts analog to digital on the line equipment card. This results in 3 D/A conversions in my service loop, not counting modem,so I suspect this is the problem. But,why always 26.4?It could and should be slower from time to time. Not much help but hope info helps. Julio Alano wrote in message ... >Is anyone else suffering from this or is it just me? >Any comments are welcome. >I am in Washington State area. It's possible that that's the best your phone line can do. However, here's something that might help. I am also using an LT WinModem and was ALWAYS connecting at 24,600. Adding the modem settting S38=0 to suppress K56 Flex and force the modem to start negotiating at V90 is now consistently giving me connect speeds of 37,333 or better. (I also have an impaired phone line and don't expect a lot better than this.) The lastest firmware revision is 5.29 available at http://www.multiwave.com/support/download.htm That also helped for me. (Also, I have found that using the -V90 parameter to force higher speeds often results in a faster reliable connection than the modem negotiates. I believer that even with version 5.29, there is still room for serious improvment in the firmware for this modem.) Whether this helps you will depend on your particular phone line and situation. I'd be interested to know if it does. Good luck Greg Julio Alano wrote in message ... >Is anyone else suffering from this or is it just me? >Any comments are welcome. >I am in Washington State area. Hi, I have the same problem down here in the Tampa Bay area. I have a Zoom 56k ext. dual mode modem what connectes only at 26.4k. The phone company says that I have "clean" lines and that I am only 2.7 miles from the nearest switching station (i was told that it should be less than 3.5 mile). Have tried many different init. strings w/o success. Julio Alano wrote: > Is anyone else suffering from this or is it just me? > Any comments are welcome. > I am in Washington State area. You might want to try visiting this site ... http://www.56k.com I have gone to this site and found it very useful .. has links to all the manufacturers and gives help to those having problems with their 56K and V.90 modems. I am usually connecting at 31200 and true transfer speeds are in the 25500 to 28800 area. I have connected as high at 46400. You may want to try disconnecting any and all phones in your home. Sometimes one phone disconnected can make a difference. Hope this info helps! Sounds to me like your phone line is not capable of supporting 56k.
This depends on how your phone is connected to the telco which may cause
too many analog to digital to analog conversions.

Join the crowd. I guess the only real cure would be to move or buy digital service. I think I might just wait and stick with the V.34. I recently upgraded my USRobotics to a v90. With one ISP I would get only connects upto 26.4, this happened with the 33.6 USRobotics as well. With another ISP I get connects of up to 41.3 with file downloads of up to 5.0k per sec (depending on the time of day). I connected a brand new Magitronics PCI v90 modem to the same computer and the same ISP yesterday and would only connect at up to 28.8 . the Magitronics PCI v90 cost $89 Can, the USRobotics sells for about $189 Can. I guess you do get what you pay for maybe. Rick Rick wrote: > Hi, I have the same problem down here in the Tampa Bay area. I have a Zoom 56k > ext. dual mode modem what connectes only at 26.4k. My 33.6 USR winmodem consistently connected at 31.2 My X2 USR winmodem usually connected at 28.8 (to USR X2 dialup) My V.90 USR winmodem usually connects at 26.4 (to USR V.90 dialup) USR, to its shame, blames my phone line. I wonder how my phone line knows to degrade itself every time I get a supposedly-faster USR modem??? -- - Dave
