Can anybody help me with a modem problem. Modem is a Web Excel 56k External Modem. Computer is a old (guessing at 1995 vintage) IBM Aptiva, Operating system is Win 98 SE. Control Panel \ System \ device Manager \ modem looks ok, no asterisk or question marks. Control Panel \ Modem \ More Info \ Diagnostics all comes up ok with all the relevant details. When I go to dial out I get a "Modem not Found " error. And the error log looks like this. 02-01-2001 11:52:05.59 - 56000bps External Fax Voice Modem in use. 02-01-2001 11:52:05.59 - Modem type: 56000bps External Fax Voice Modem 02-01-2001 11:52:05.59 - Modem inf path: PURETE~1.INF 02-01-2001 11:52:05.59 - Modem inf section: Modem_6 02-01-2001 11:52:05.82 - 115200,N,8,1 02-01-2001 11:52:05.85 - 115200,N,8,1 02-01-2001 11:52:05.85 - Initializing modem. 02-01-2001 11:52:05.85 - Send: AT<cr> 02-01-2001 11:52:07.85 - Recv: <no response> 02-01-2001 11:52:07.85 - WARNING: Unrecognized response. You sure you havent got more than one modem installed ? It isnt hard to do that and its not surprising that one of them does the diagnostic fine but the other thats been setup in that DUN connectoid isnt responding because that other phantom modem isnt really there. How many modems are visible in Control Panel \ System \ device Manager \ modem If there is more than one, delete them all. Turn the modem off. Reboot the system with the modem off. Turn the system off again, turn the modem on, boot the system again and install the modem thats seen.

Thanks for your reply Rod. Yes DEFINITELY only one modem installed. It has been suggested to me that I may have the wrong driver. I downloaded the driver from the Australian distributor of this modem. http://www.protac.com.au/files/modem/index.html I will try uninstalling and just let windows install the driver from WIN98 Pepe.. Damned odd that the diagnostic/more info can talk to the modem but the DUN connectoid cant. Did it ever work, just stopped working or has never worked ? How about the modem diagnostics from control panel ? To reset it to factory defaults send AT&F to it from a Hyperterm session connected directly to the relevant com port. Is the com port used by anything else ? Is it disabled in the bios ? Is the com port installed under windows ? The log says nothing comes back at all. 'no response' But clearly the diagnostics/more info does return strings from the modem. > sounds like someone might have an extra dial string set... Nope, the setup strings specified in the inf file for the modem are sent to the modem, and DUN expects some response from the modem, before it sends the extra settings, last in the modem setup. The log shows that DUN aint getting anything back from the modem. But diagnostics/more info does. > Rod Speed <rod_speed@yahoo.com> wrote >> Pepe Duran <pepe_d@bigfoot.com> wrote > > > Thanks for your reply Rod. > > > > > Yes DEFINITELY only one modem installed. > > > > > It has been suggested to me that I may have the wrong driver. > > > > Thats why I commented in the modem log at the top, it > > looks like the right one. Pity its useless in a situation where hyperteminal is available because DUN will override it when it does the modem setup on dialout.

Hyperterminal is even easier, they already know how to launch a Win app and just need to be told how to tell it to use a COM port directly. And its more capable than the DOS pipe too. >> Pity its useless in a situation where hyperteminal is available because >> DUN will override it when it does the modem setup on dialout. > i wasnt alluding to using dos to insert a string to the > modem becuase of course DUN starts off with &F So the DOS pipe is useless in that situation being discussed. And no real use in any Win9x installation either. Its only really useful in a DOS machine which doesnt have a DOS terminal program. > hyperterminal is different kettle of fish when talking to some real novices. In theory, yes. In practice is no more difficult to explain how to use hyperterminal to talk to a com port directly than it is to tell someone how to drop to DOS in a Win9x machine. > especially when in so many systems hyperterminal > is not even installed. so first you got to get it installed > then walk them through the setup. that takes so long. Wild exaggeration. > that DOS pipe is something quick and easy. And useless in the situation being discussed. Hyperterminal is rather more useful if installing the modem using the standard Win9x driver still doesnt see DUN getting any response from the modem. Hyperterminal can be used to see if the AT is being sent, if the modem responds to it, if Hyperterminal sees the response. If hyperterminal does see the response and DUN doesnt, very likely DUN is broken and needs to be reinstalled. And since the modem is reinstalled anyway, no big deal to install hyperterminal too. Its handy for other stuff like the after call stats etc which are also useful once the modem does dial out. > the easy test b4 going to Hyperterminal is to ask the person > what time does it show on their video recorder and/or microwave > if they say its 12.00 and flashing then you have no chance in > hell of teaching them hyperterminal inside an hour :-) Wota silly wanker you are Blake. Its just as easy to teach them how to use hyperterminal on a specified com port as that DOS pipe. And there is more that they can do once they've done it too. The DOS pipe is useless on a Win9x system today, the world's moved on.

The short story is that the term pipe is the more general term and the action is a pipe.
