Maximum Refresh on Monster 3D is 60Hz with some heavy iron!

Have a new PII-300, 128 MB RAM, with an STB Velocity 128 (Riva 128), and a 19" monitor. The Riva works great, but just to muck up the works, I decided to throw in my Monster 3D. Problem is with all this heavy iron, I can't do better than 60 HZ at 640*480 and 800*600 with Desktop|Properties|Monster 3D settings. I even tried putting SET SST_SCREENREFRESH=75 in my autoexec.bat, only to have this parameter overwritten back down to 60 each time I access the Monster 3D settings. Am using version 1.09 of Monster drivers and v1.30 of the STB Velocity 128. Could the problem lie with my monitor.inf file? Any help appreciated! E-mail response appreciated! -- Larry Schachter lrscpa@5carroll.com ****>For E-mail reply, please remove the 5 from the return address<****

I don't believe the monster controls desktop refresh rates. I KNOW that the Monster cannot do 60Hz at 512x384, it has to do 75Hz. I'm doing 800x600 desktop with 85Hz refresh rate. I'm almost sure the monster has nothing to do with it. M..., No, the Monster 3D runs fine in 800x600 mode, and can be set to a maximum refresh rate of 120 Mhz. If your monitor doesn't support such a high refresh rates, other options are 60, 75 and 85 Mhz. One of those refresh rates are supported by most of today's monitors. Hi Larry, Long time no 'see'. How are you? The Monster 3D runs fine in 800x600 mode, and can be set to a maximum refresh rate of 120 Mhz. If your monitor doesn't support such a high refresh rates, other options are 60, 75 and 85 Mhz. One of those refresh rates are supported by most of today's monitors. I myself am using the drivers that are available at www.3dfx.com and they come with this handy utility that will let you change the refreshrates to the above values. This utility can be accesed via a tab in the Display applet in your control panel. If you look at display properties in Win95 (I have OSR/2 so it may be slightly different) and you look at the Monster 3D settings tab it will show what the monster is set to for each resolution as far as refresh. This takes effect when the Monster is in operation. On the same tab it will show what Win95 thinks according to the monitor set-up that your monitor can handle. Your Monster probably won't come close to touching it. But as far as your Riva's refresh in the Windows 2D environment go to the settings tab in display properites and advanced properties. here you can set your refresh rate for your Riva. I have mine set to 90hz at 800x600 in 16-bit color. I can switch resolutions on the fly though. I have my Monster 3D set-up for 60hz at the 640x480 resolution and had no problems. now is the "problem" you're experiencing a fuzzy picture, and offsize screen in 3DFx or what? I had "problems" until I set up a couple of custom configs in my monitor itself (out of range modes). I don't know about the monster and the monitor.inf file, but I have a Viper 330 and KFC 17", I also have a Stingray 128 w/ 6megs.. Well the stingray works great, but the Viper gives a very blurry screen after a few minutes... no help from TS either.. So I started to mess with monitor settings and found the Compaq monitor for 17" works perfect! been running for 4 days and no blurry screen! go figure its worth a shot.. -- David Email : durst@axtek.com Home : www.axtek.com/durst Desert Air : www.axtek.com/durst/da.htm Larry Schachter wrote in message <34DD3B7A.9A020DA8@5carroll.com>... >Have a new PII-300, 128 MB RAM, with an STB Velocity 128 (Riva 128), and >a 19" monitor. Yes, I think that's the problem because I had the same thing with my Monster 3D. You have to select another monitor from the list (Display Settings -> Monitor) which support a higher refresh-rate. Just take an expensive one... Then you can choose another refresh-rate for the Monster. When you "fooled" the card, select your old Monitor setting. It worked for me !!! Bram e-mail: bdenboer@usa.net

You can run 800x600 with the Monster - FS98 does it. Make sure that you actually have something set for your monitor type in My Computer -> Device Manager -> Monitor. I originally used the Matrox MGA monitor settings to pick my monitor, and you don't see the selection under My Computer, thus limiting my Monster3D to 60Hz. ---- Kal Wallner Montreal, Canada ICQ: 1103841 NOTE: Remove 'NO_CANNED_MEAT' from my email when replying directly!

Schwann, You're absolutely right. The ultimate limit is imposed by the best common video card-monitor setting for a given resoultion and color depth. In a perfect world, each device's driver would be able to detect the highest common setting from the others. However, due to shortcutting, revisions, BIOS updates etc, that may not reflect across the board, some vendors include custom settings, like Matrox does with its MGA PowerDesk utilities for use with monitors instead of the default monitor drivers. In MOST cases, there should be no problem letting windows do its job. But for any of the reasons I mention above, if one or all participants decides to misbehave, then some manual tweaking is in order. I can't think of a case where this is application-dependent, at least most certainly not within FS98. I hope this helps! Kindest Regards, William R. Am I missing something here...? I don't think so Larry, I am running at 100mhz to120mhz on my system per the monitor on-screen info. If I turn down the juice to 60mhz, you can see the difference. It does seem to depend on the 2D card as well. With my last card, 60mhz was all she could do.
