Two changes at Altopia today:

 - We have enabled SSL NNTP access for all accounts. Standard port 563.
   No additional cost.

 - We now have a $12 per month unthrottled/unlimited offering. Existing
customers can adjust their account via the "Account Maintenance"
   section of:

      https://www.altopia.com/

Much appreciation for your new or continued patronage,
Chris Caputo
President, Altopia Corporation

Those of us already on $12 a month 256kbit/sec are now automatically on unlimited? Or do we have to adjust our accounton the webpage?

Mine seems to be still running at 256.

A Pakistani arrives in London City all excited. He stops the first person he meets. "Good day, Mr. British, thank you to accept me in Your nice country", but the person interrupts and says: "I am not British, I'm Chinese."
The Pakistani continues on his way and meets another passer-by. "Thank you Mr. British for to let my family and me stay here... " Again, he's interrupted before finishing his sentence. "I no be British, I be Turk!"
He goes a little farther and meets another person and greets him "thank you for letting me come to your beautiful country." ... "I'm not British, I'm Kosavon."
"But," answers the Pakistani distressed, "where are the British??"
The Kosavon looks at his watch and says ..... "Probably at work."

Please adjust your account on the web site or simply let me know at
support@altopia.com.

For the time being, I have made it so the server is no longer limiting
anyone on the old plans at 256kbit or above, so you should not be being
throttled.

Does the traceroute to you (https://www.altopia.com/cgi-bin/nph-trace)
look good?

Thanks,

Done.

Thanks. I'm getting awful speeds just now, but that's probably my line's fault, it did disconnect 5 minutes ago. I'll check speeds again tomorrow.

Yes! Only one hop other than the Altopia one and my ISP ones.

But it appears that after "paying its bills on time", the concept of
retention was reduced to procrastination and thrown out the window.

Nine days of retention is evidence that Altopia is light years behind the
competition. It's a sad testament that reveals a lack of planning and
involved the least bit of effort running a business. All of these factors
should be attributed to a dismal profit margin and motivation to
participate in a fruitless venture.

Keep waving the banner of stupidity and crowds will flock from uncharted
destinations for the entertainment.

Criticism accepted. If endless binaries retention is what someone cares
about, obviously we aren't the best service for them.

As our web site says: "... we have worked hard to continue to be a source
for uncensored Usenet access. In addition to carrying any group
requested, we also try to push the limits on freedom of expression so that
our customers can type what they want, without worry."

For the most part, but keep in mind:

"(This does not mean we allow abuse of Usenet, such as flooding.) As a
carrier, we protect customer privacy to the maximum extent allowed by
law while we cooperate with law enforcement and copyright holders as
  required by law."

I am interested in an account but want to know the owner's viewpoint on this
subject: Does Altopia expect subscribers to honor the guidelines of a FAQ
and will accusations of abuse terminate the account?

We expect subscribers to honor the polices as laid out at:

  https://www.altopia.com/policy.html

We do not keep up with individual group FAQs nor do we enforce policies
based on them.

>and will accusations of abuse terminate the account?

Accusations of abuse result in investigations of alleged abuse. If a
customer is believed to be violating our policies, we normally give a
warning, followed by escalation if warnings are ignored. Sometimes a
violation is so egregious, like flooding or massive advertising, that we
may shut down posting ability without a warning. Depends on the
circumstances.

Accusations of abuse which are not in violation of our policies are
generally ignored. Sometimes I reply to a complainer, but normally if
they have not taken the time to understand our policies, I do not bother.

Happy to answer any other questions,

Do you have any kind of "Don't frequently nymshift to evade kill-files"
policy? eg If a troll was nym-shifting several times a day to disrupt a
news group would you ask them to stop?

They say they protect your identity, so no one will know it, but in
usenet, you're only allowed one identity!!!

No.

No.

As long as a poster isn't infringing on someone else's real email address
or domain, they can be creative and set their From: address as they like,
and vary it as they want.

I've seen many a perfectly good newsgroup ruined by your
customers thanks to that policy. Usenet is hardly worth bothering
with now and you are largely to blame for that. You must be very
proud.

I don't know why this got cross-posted to unnc, since it seems to
originate elsewhere. However I find it mildly amusing that someone
posting as George G <invalid@invalid.invalid> should be complaining
about what other users stick in their From: address. It also seems from
here that George G has cross-posted a message in order to stir up
trouble or to harvest howls of outrage at a statement made by Chris
Caputo. Again, hardly impeccable behaviour.

FWIW, I've supported Altopia for some time. I disagree profoundly with
the trolls and newsgroup wreckers who want to drive other users off
usenet or to reduce groups to a smoking wasteland of cascades or
kilobytes of re-posed ASCII art. However I can't blame Chris Caputo for
that. It's the immature individuals concerned that are the root of the
problem and often their "opponents" such as George G are in exactly the
same boat.

I've found that for genuine net abuse concerns Chris has been
unfailingly polite and helpful. Much more so than say NTL or BT.

uk.net.news.config is not an irrelevant newsgroup as many NGs in
the uk hierarchy have fallen victim to Altopia trolls.

The point is that Chris Caputo allows his trolling customers to
nym-shift with impunity. That destroys newsgroups. If you don't
like what I write, killfile me. I won't nym-shift to defeat the
filter.

It was completely irrelevant to your rant against an individual (Chris
Caputo) and your post is most definitely off-topic here since it has
nothing to do with the configuration of the uk hierarchy.

It wasn't a rant, it was a statement of fact. Strictly speaking it
is probably off-topic; however, off-topic posts account for a large
proportion of unnc.

When subscribers leave a NG due to the wrecking antics of nym-

For someone not wanting to start a flame war, you behave exactly like

I propose the news server strips the "follow-up" header. If you want to change the groups it goes to, then do so in the newsgroups header, people should not be able to post to one set, and have replies go elsewhere. It's childish.

Altopia sells itself as the NSP that allows its customers to nym-
shift, Easynews does not. That is why nym-shifting trolls use
Altopia and not Easynews or the other quality NSPs that offer
better retention, completion and more gigs for less money.

That's a poor analogy. Would your telephone provider knowingly
allow you to make anonymous threatening calls? That is a better
one.

My logic? I'm critisising Altopia's policy of allowing nym-shifting
to troll. That is all.

Please show me how to killfile a nym-shifting troll other than by
the path.

I've never seen that selling point. Can you please provide a link
to that on Alt.net's website which sells itself on the NSP that allows
it's customers to nym-shift.

| Easynews does not.

Really... Let's put that to the test.

Please show _where_ in Easynews' AUP that it states nym-shifting is
a TOS offence... and I'll even provide you with their TOS/AUP link.

| That is why nym-shifting trolls use Altopia and not Easynews or the

Are you truly this stupid or do you practise at it? Perhaps you
live a sheltered life inside that hobble of a group you call home
... but Nym-shifting trolls have no preference to which NSP they
use, let alone Alt.net.

| That's a poor analogy. Would your telephone provider knowingly

There you go again, making a fool of yourself. A telephone company
has a set of rules you have to follow in order to have their service
the same as an NSP/ISP.

If it is not against the rules (re:law), a person is going to do whatever
they like and that doesn't change the facts that the telephone company is
and cannot be help RESPONSIBLE for the actions of it's customers.

Sheesh.... how many times does a sledge hammer have to hit you upside
of the head before this point gets driven into your thick head?

If a person makes an anonymous threatening call and is caught, who do
you think get's the charges laid against them. The telephone company
or the person who made the call? If you say the former - you provide
enough reason for nym-shifting trolls to ridicule you, cause you're
an idiot.

Yes - we've covered that and you've made a fool of yourself.

What you're doing is blaming the NSP for other peoples actions
all because you can't report them to their provider and get rid
of them. You're truly pitiful. How does it feel knowing that
you're powerless, eh NetKKKop?

When I last visited unnc a few years back the content of the group
was for the most part on-topic. You say it hasn't been trashed.
We'll have to agree to disagree on that.

My complaint was about nym-shifting to avoid the killfile. I can be
killfiled and stay killfiled. That said, I've had my say and will
not add to the noise of unnc anymore unless I see a reply to a post
of mine that needs addressing.

You've not been following this thread very carefully then.
Chris Caputo was advertising his new improved service on abn-s-c. A
potential new customer asked him "Do you have any kind of "Don't
frequently nymshift to evade kill-files" policy?".
CC replied "No".
The potential new customer also asked him "If a troll was nym-
shifting several times a day to disrupt a news group would you ask
them to stop?".
Again CC replied "No".

I wasn't following the thread at all until it got cross-posted to u.n.n.c
where it is off-topic.

That's not evidence that "Altopia sells itself as the NSP that allows its
customers to nym-shift".
