I called AT&T to see if I owe money as for some reason I don't get bills anymore. My dry "elite" DSL went from $45 to $48, for 6Mb. WTF. so, I check if I can get uverse stuff for faster internet, at the same scam ripoff prices. I can see one of those boxes outside my window. I can, so I order the 12Mb service which is supposed to be $50 something per month or $35ish per month for 1 year if I commit to 1 year. fine. There's some mandatory modem you need to get for $100. It's total bullshit, but they don't seem to be items you replace all that often. I opt for self install. I can operate a wire and an outlet all by myself and not lose $300 of work and pay $149 to be stood up by some install tech. They even claim a due date of 4-13, whatever that really means: Processing We received your order and it's scheduled to complete on the date displayed. 04/09/2012 04/13/2012 Feel free to place your bets on how this order gets all jacked up. My mailing address is different from my service address, but I clearly select the mailing address as the place to ship the scam modem to.

I think you need it though, the one they gave me is a hybrid of sorts, does the adsl2+ or whatever it's called compatability, which is only good to 6mb and the other mode for the "up to 24mb". I dunno, maybe there is no difference but at least the Moto nvg510 they gave me doesn't use that stupid mac address based firewall. That drove me nuts when trying to put two ip's on a single interface with some of the machines. There is one stupid thing on that 510, there is no admin login. If you just go to 192.168.1.254 on the lan, or someone visiting you, the default status page shows the network key for the wireless, in plaintext. They did have to come out a second time with me, like I mentioned, the original install for uverse was 3 days because of the "new line", old service and typical right hand doesn't know what the left was doing. It was rock solid for two weeks, then around 5pm a couple fridays ago, it just went to shit, kept rebooting, reds on the service/internet lights, no sync. It didn't matter, we were busy otherwise and next morning, early, it was ok again, but slower (maybe 3-3.5mb), Then around 5pm again on saturday, same thing. And sunday night. Monday morning, it was close to 7am and was still rebooting, so I called service and after they tried for 20 minutes to talk to the thing, they decided it was some kind of line problem, but surprisingly said they could get someone out in a couple hours (before noon), that same day. They actually sent someone out who was pretty sharp, after listening to my explanation of the problem, he said it sounded like the alley lights. According to him they have had problems with grounding in some areas where when the alley lights fire up, the dsl/uverse goes to shit because of interference. He probed around for a while and did find something wrong in the back casing drop thing behind the house (in the alley), which I guess they use for splicing the individual drops to the house. As soon as he did whatever he did, it synced right back up to 6mb again and been rock solid since. Have to admit, besides the original installer who admitted he was only on the job for a month, the rest of the techs they sent for troubleshooting have hit the problem on the head with the first shot. And I did get the first bills already, the new pots line and uverse, looks like it's going to be around $50 a month in savings for the 12 months, around $70 total vs. the $120 old. So not too bad overall. -bruce bje@ripco.com

I think his objection is probably less that one does need different equipment over "old" DSL and more that they're forcing him to purchase it from them. He could probably find one for a lot cheaper than $100.

I'm not sure why I have to buy the damn modem, and not also buy some line card out in the alley or pay for some other crap. My current speedstream 4100 is pretty dusty though. It says first booted upin March 2006 and has the old ugly SBC logo all over each page. > I dunno, maybe there is no difference but at least the Moto nvg510 they gave > me doesn't use that stupid mac address based firewall. If you just > go to 192.168.1.254 on the lan, or someone visiting you, the default status > page shows the network key for the wireless, in plaintext. All those devices are pretty jenky. I'm using a cisco ASA because it has POE so I can run my access point and a camera (I'm a cam whore) off it, plus it doesn't break VPN traffic like whatever the early 2000s IOS on my 2620 had. hopefully I don't run into the nonsense you did, but waching crappy youtube videos becomes obnoxious with 6Mb DSL if you want to see stuff at 720hd or whatever they call it. Someody is traffic shaping that, somewhere along the line, but I can't determine who it is. I just got two 3.8Ghz xeons for my 2006ish desktop at home, which I also got windows 7 for. Amusingly, throwing $30 upgrade parts from the computer scrapper places is still cheaper than just getting a new computer that can actually power 5 or 6 hard drives.

Both times I ordered the Uverse internet I had to pay $100 for the modem but I got an instant rebate/credit for $100. No, his objection is the same as mine: AT&T customer service demands that the subscriber buy new equipment, without having any ability to explain why the old equipment is incompatible. On the cable side, DOCSIS 3.0 is backwards compatible. Why isn't ADSL? C.L., I'd be very curious to know if you could get it to work with your current equipment.

I just recall the days where if you signed up, you got whatever hardware you needed included at no extra cost.

I decided it was a scam. was it though? When you order service online, there's no option to remove the modem. When you call, you can't get online pricing. >>I just recall the days where if you signed up, you got whatever >>hardware you needed included at no extra cost. > > If you get insistent, they might give you a rebate. I think it's some kind of loyalty program or something. The second time I called that number to "upgrade" the service (which was the one the first time told me to toss the letter), when they pulled up the costs of the new service, it showed like $54 a month, $100 for the modem and the fee for the "professional installation", which was like another $150 or $200. Once they entered the order though, the monthly dropped to $19.95 plus $15 for the statics, the modem and installation fees changed to "no charge". Only other thing I can think of, maybe it stops the order people from giving free service to their friends or something. The system applies the discounts and wavied fees instead of the person writing up the order. Keep in mind that whole pricing structure they use is a scam of sorts, if you can actually find the tariff and rates, which are buried on their website, the 3mb dsl service is actually valued at $121 a month for the reoccuring rate. -bruce bje@ripco.com

I think in the early days of Ameritech selling DSL, they might of included the modem, but the modem wasn't a router nor did it do wifi. It was just a blackbox to interface a single computer, you had to run some kind of software on the machine to login and connect to the internet. But you couldn't network, unless you shared the machine to other machines. The modem was free or included with the service, but I don't think they ever gave away the modem/router/wifi device, those they always charged for, maybe as an upgrade to the stand alone modem, then as part of the basic installation later. Again, I'm a little different because I've always had static addresses but I know in Jan of 2002 when I first signed up, there was a charge for the Speedstream router, it wasn't free. No wifi either. -bruce bje@ripco.com

I opened the modem box. the thing os fucking huge, like it's made by russians. It's seriousl like a foot wide, 2 inces thick and maybe 10 inches deep. Bonus- it has a huge fucking dent in it too. And for Adam, my old modem is not running at 12Mb, just the original 6Mb, like before. So yeah, you need the new 8 times larger and broken piece of shit modem to switch from DSL to uverse.

So, it turns out they never switched me to uverse, because somebody could not get to the basement. No idea why they need to get into the basement, there's nothing down there. Amusingly, the tech called me at work, asking if I was home. I said no, and asked if he needed to get into the basement and the answer was no, just try it out after 8pm. The crushed 2wire 1970s sized device doesn'y sync up with my existing DSL, and the existing DSL is still up and working. I did get some robot spam email saying my order has been taken and I'll get a new modem or something like that. Who want to bet that it's some refurb unit? If you care, there's a huge uverse call center in AZ.

I got another call from the install techm this time he said he needed to get into the basement. I sugged it probably wasn't needed as I already have DSL and no voice service, so just change whatever at the pole or vrad or wherever. The guy sounded irritated, but said he'd try it. I got home and my current DSL modem was flashing red, so I swapped it out for the russian komputer modem, which took a while to sync up, but it did come up. I had to create a new stupid AT&T email address as I don't know the old one or password, but I made up some shit and got past the registration intercept all traffic page. I measured a legit 11.5Mb down, 1.5Mb up. Other than neededing a new modem that's not all pounded in like the sides of some ghettomobile things look ok so far.

If anyone gives a damn as to why I haven't been around for a few days, AT&T forced me to convert from DSL to Uverse and it took a couple of days to provision my service. I had to buy another device, but we'll see if I get the promised rebate. I got the technical explanation as to why I couldn't use my existing ADSL2 device: Because Uverse is provisioned from the exchange, not the central office. Also some bullshit about pair bonding and how they hard coded the MAC address into my account. C.L., did you actually get your DSL device to work? Please tell me how. I really want to send this equipment back.

I don't think you can use the old hardware anymore. Even in CL's message, he said when he came home the old router was flashing the red lights and had to hook up the oversized new one. I think the protocol is the same (adsl2+) but the carrier it's sitting on is all different (bonded pair). Something like that. The old one sent the username/password, like you got told, the new ones use the mac address or some other identifier. I tried that here, after the problems were solved with the line and I needed to put the router in it's final resting place, for yucks I plugged the new line into the old 2wire, and nada. It just sat there trying to sync up and never could. It's sort of like your old analog tv, it goes thru the motion of picking up OTA channels, but they aren't there anymore, so it doesn't work. -bruce bje@ripco.com

The return label was included in the paperwork in the oversized envelope in the box the new device came in. It has an empty box for RMA number which I'd get from customer service if I wish to send it back. If you haven't thrown out the paperwork, you've already got the label. You should probably send it back so they don't charge you for it. How much did they bill you for your device?

I don't recall when it's payed until, since they keep not mailing bills. I need to lookup what day my service really went live and make sure I'm credited for those. Only a phone company could take two charges and somehow turn that into 900 line items.

I just noticed that my charges for service are $29 something, not $32 something, which it mentions over and over again. I have no idea why this is.

You only get ripped off by the phone company vs. them and local and federal taxes to keep dialtone in the trailer park or whatever they claim they need money for.

In Illinois there is a 15%(!!) 'telecommunications tax' on all data circuits. City of Chicago also taxes data circuits. *Many* providers bundle those in their base charge, and don't bother to itemize it separately, but the gov't -does- get it's bite of your pocketbook.

If AT&T is fucking over the city, I'm all for that too.

I located the cause of the $3 difference in my monthly chart for the first month. the motherfuckers charged me $3 for a "plan change" which is probably from them having ot reorder me a modem or something. I'm going to have that bullshit removed when I get a chance.
