DATE: Wed, 5 Aug 1998 15:59:55 From: "Ken and Cheri Bett" knc @ ij.net Dear Friends and Friends of Friends, Subject: Best Buys Retail Stores is not a Consumer Friendly/Parent Friendly Store I promised Best Buys I was writing this letter and sending it to all my friends. Please be aware that Best Buys return policy is as follows: No returns without a receipt. No returns after 30 days, even if you possess a receipt and the product is unopened and unused. The latter policy is what has caused me to write and warn all. As most of you know Ken and I have two girls ages 3 and 2 (16 months apart). Most of you can probably sympathize with the problems of purchasing merchandise and returning merchandise with young ones in tow. Best Buys does not. On 6/29/98, I bought a printer, scanner, printer cable (which they told me I'd have to buy, because the one I had for my laser printer wouldn't work. They were wrong.), and a surge protector (which I actually asked for a telephone line protector, but was given an electrical surge protector with a telephone line protector). On 8/3/98, I finally made it back to Best Buys to return the printer cable and surge protector, unopened, unused, and with receipt (my niece was baby sitting the girls). Guess what! I was 5 days too late. They refused to refund my money and offered a store credit instead (As if I need a store credit more than my money). I spoke to the Manager on Duty, I spoke to Corporate Headquarters. I explained the difficulties of returning to the store with children in tow. I told them I had no need of a store credit. I told them I would never return to Best Buys for further purchases, and that I'd warn all my friends, my family, and anyone that would listen. They didn't care. Evidently they're not interested in repeat business or referral business. My main mistake was not reading the back of the receipt, which is where you will find the return policy. Please take heed of this warning, and warn others. I have since spoken to several friends who have had, or know someone who has had, similar experiences with Best Buys. Best Buys retail store is not a best buy if your stuck with merchandise or a store credit that you don't want or can't use. Please forward this warning to everyone you know. Thanks. Respectfully yours, Cheri Bett knc&ij.net -- Here is my favorite movie/book quote: Light of my life. Fire of my loins. My sin. Best Buys - Has to be on sale, you have to know what to buy, you have to hope they have it and don't consider any "rebates" in your puchasing decision.

Started to do the same thing to us, so we denied his access to our store (enforced by the LP personnel). Rules are not might to be broken and in the woman's situation, there was absolutely no good reason to break the rules for her, none what-so-ever. If you really want, I can explain why the 30 days exist. All stores have areas that are "planogrammed". About every few months, they change, and so does the product line. Stores only have a certain amount of time to send product back to the manufacturer. So, if Joe Blow brings back a radio that had be discontinued for over a month, the store is out of luck. They cannot receive a credit anymore and must sell the product at a reduced price, thus, they lose money (but, they have a happy customer, so it's Bottom Line vs. Happy Customer). >Have noticed more retailers getting bitchy toward their customers >lately, whatever happened to customer is always right. Do you run your own business? If not, I would really like to use that philosophy when shopping at your store. The customer is NOT always right. In fact, customers have LIED about me, saying things I never said. I am a Christian and there is right and wrong. I will stand for what's right, if I gave the customer wrong advice, I'll admit. But if I didn't, I will fight my ground with them. >Had an unpleasant Best Buy prive match experience lately (one day past their >14 days) so, although I am generally pleased with purchases there, I'll punish them >by making my next few purchases elsewhere. Well, with $8 billion and them at the number one spot in the electronics realm, let's assume the average transaction is $100. You just cost them 1/80000000 in sales. That's the way to build consumer loyalty. LOL There is a 15% restocking fee on laptops ONLY. The reason for this was that students were coming in, buying a laptop, writing a report on it and then returning it. Let's put it thus way. I don't care what site you order from, you have to pay shipping and if you return that product and it is NOT defective, you are charged a restocking fee. Best Buy does not do this (unless the product is missing some parts), they just absorb the lost. You know what, I don't feel a bit sorry for you-their policies were posted. There are stores in the San Francisco Bay Area that have a 3-7 day return policy, and that is WITH a receipt...... ablang@my-dejanews.com wrote: > > DATE: Wed, 5 Aug 1998 15:59:55 > From: "Ken and Cheri Bett" knc @ ij.net > > Dear Friends and Friends of Friends, > > Subject: Best Buys Retail Stores is not a Consumer Friendly/Parent > Friendly Store > > I promised Best Buys I was writing this letter and sending it to all my > friends. And on a big sign in the customer service area, and on signs located on the counters next to every register. I'm sympathetic up to a point, but their policy is reasonable and typical, and your ignorance of it changes nothing. Short of having the cashier verbally inform every customer of the return policy (an unreasonable and unnecessary thing to do), BB has done everything they can to inform you of it. Your failure to read what's in front of you is no one's fault but your own. Having children admittedly makes these things more complicated but doesn't entitle you to special treatment. 30 days is more than enough time to return an item if you don't want it. >Please forward this warning to everyone you know. Thanks. Why should I waste bandwidth because you can't read what's in front of you and live in a fantasy world where products can be returned months later without a problem. The people I know have a clue, and don't need a "warning" about silly things like this. But thank you for sharing your foolishness. Frank Garcia (remove NOSPAM to reply by email)

Actually if Best Buy personnel had any brains, they would waive their rules in situations like this (all managers have that power). Better to keep a customer than loose one. Have noticed more retailers getting bitchy toward their customers lately, whatever happened to customer is always right. Had an unpleasant Best Buy prive match experience lately (one day past their 14 days) so, although I am generally pleased with purchases there, I'll punish them by making my next few purchases elsewhere. Thus they'll probably loose more profit that they would have gained by accomadating me. With competitors all over in shopping malls, strip malls, internet, etc. it would seem to be in a store's best interest to keep a customer. Your Own Free Member Forum

Best Buy used to be excellent for having the latest computer products in their computer dept and for their help and eagerness to help locate a product. Now, as of the last 6 months, Best Buy has turned into the most rudest people in the computer departments, hiring cheese eating snot nosed geeks who are very rude and uncaring. All Best Buys in my area (Dallas/Ft. Worth) has horrible, rude, jerks working in the computer departments at Best Buy. They sound tired, fed up and don't want to a lift a finger to help locate a product at other Best Buys if the specific Best Buys I visit or call don't have something in the store. BoyCott Best Buy. I beleive they also have a restocking fee for returned merchandise and I find many businesses are adopting this. I think it's a poor decsion for companies to do this because your returning a product that was defective not the right item, etc. and then they say "Thanks for returning this product you had a poor experience with and by the way you need to pay us for restocking." That's the way to build consumer loyalty. LOL You were only 5 days over due and the products weren't even opened they should have given you a break. Best Buy Sucks. I bought a CL Voodoo2 card there a few weeks ago that was supposed to have a $30.00 rebate. They did not have the rebate coupons and gave me a "raincheck". Called Creative Labs and asked them about getting a coupon. They said they were not offering a rebate...that was strictly a BestBuy rebate. BestBuy claims it is Creative Labs responsibility. I will not purchase anything from BestBuy again.

Tight labor market . . . As for the unfortunate experience that initiated this thread, it's understandable that the customer is unhappy, but there was a WRITTEN policy. It would have been NICE if Best Buy made an exception for good customer service, but it was its prerogative. The saddest thing is: I wish there were Best Buys, CompUSAs, and the other "horrible" computer superstores here in Fort Myers. Currently, there's NOTHING. ------------------------------- DKM wrote in message <4BE98B831FD4EB84.CDB79074A6B881CB.81345B37571CE783@library-proxy.airnews.ne t>... Let them know that we are the customer and they cannot be rude to us and expect our business.

Sounds reasonable.

This is reasonable too. 30 days is a long time.
[snip whinning from a spoiled person]
You were trying to ripe off Best Buy.

That's the case for most stores. They have a huge sign up on the wall, as well as at the checkout (at least, the one where I live does). Though I'm not saying best buy is a good store (i had my bad experience when looking for a monitor), this is standard policy everywhere. Sometimes it may be even worse (some online computer stores have a 15-day return policy from invoice!!) You need to remember to ask about it when you purchase things.

Every company I have ever worked for has said give >the customer what they want, or you won't have customers for very long. I didn't say that you couldn't get some kind of return, just that having a "no returns without receipt" policy is normal. In this case, he wasn't dealing with this particular policy, but with the 30-day one. And you'll notice that they offered him a return by store credit (consistent with the customer service approach you describe). He's just pissed because after five weeks he wants *cash* back, and they won't give it to him. You do what you can to try to please the customer, but eventually you have to start drawing lines. Their approach in this situation was reasonable and accomodating -- the fact that he's got something up his butt that makes him ornery isn't their fault. I'd go farther and say that the offer was in fact reasonable, not just seemingly reasonable. The poster came in 5 weeks after the purchase and wanted a refund. According to their store policy, they could've flat out refused, but instead they offered a refund by store credit. This was a good customer service approach. The original poster's fixation on getting a cash refund after so long was clearly unreasonable. Frank Garcia (remove NOSPAM to reply by email)
